"We don't look around when we run. We have to look at the ground and concentrate on the floor in front of us. For me, its also a form of mental training, honing your alertness and endurance."

I resisted this idea before I started barefoot running. "But, I like to let my mind wander and zone out during my run!"

Barefoot is a great way to be completely mindful during your run. You're focused on the ground, watching where you're stepping and completely connected to the here-and-now. I realize now it's enjoyable to me the same way mountain biking was enjoyable: you *have* to pay attention on a narrow trail or you'll hit a tree. You don't have the ability to think about your day, worry about tomorrow or anything: you're just there, exactly in the moment doing what you need to do to move ahead safely.
