Those who enjoy the exhilarating feeling of bare feet on cool grass can raise money for charity by participating in the third annual Barefoot Benefit on Sunday, October 21.

The 2:00 p.m. event will take place at the fairways of Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville. Five undergraduates in the College of Business Administration are organizing it as part of a service-learning course.

The benefit is a run or walk of either 5K, which is 3.1 miles, or 1 mile. Shoes are permitted but not required.

All proceeds from the event will go to Samaritan Place, a Knoxville-area shelter specializing in the care of low-income senior citizens.

Ernie Cadotte, professor of the service-learning course that is organizing the benefit, said he had high hopes for this year’s turnout.

“The 2011 Barefoot Benefit welcomed 130 runners,” he said. “Our goal for 2012 is 250 runners and walkers.”

This year’s event will feature a runners’ clinic conducted by Mick Larrabee, physical therapist for Optimal Performance. The topic of the clinic will focus on barefoot running.

In addition to the clinic, the event will include live entertainment, free food, and prizes. Michael Whitesides, Karen Reynolds, Jared Henderson, Kudzu, the Josiah Atchley Band, and Shake Ragg will perform from noon to 4:30 p.m., and door prizes from local businesses will be raffled off throughout the day.

Pilot Flying J, Petro’s, and Earthfare are sponsoring the event.

Students involved in planning the Barefoot Benefit are excited to display their hard work.

“Our team has been trying to put together the best and most visionary Barefoot Benefit yet,” said Nicole Rammer, this year’s student event director. “We can’t wait for runners and families to come and see what we have in store.”
