NYT article on running myths... what do y'all think?

huh what, didn't even know this forum existed. o_O

1)The problem with this kind of video during a race: You can't draw conclusions:
They don't say at what point in the race the camera was stationed: At the end of a fast long distance race, runners who usually use forefoot or midfoot strike might also put in some heel strikes: At the finish running form might be somewhat different than at the beginning. And anyway during a race running form might be somewhat different than during training. However it is the running form during training that is crucial for the longevity of athletes: Recurrent form errors in training and you are in for some pause-inflicting injuries. Form errors during a race probably can't be avoided with the stress and adrenaline and all that, but as they are punctual they won't stop your career.

2) Personally I don't think that studies done on a treadmill mean anything: Though I wouldn't go as far as to say treadmill running is another sport altogether :D, the running gait and push off are different on a treadmill compared to running on a non moving ground: With or without shoes you are using slightly different muscles on a treadmill, so you can't draw a conclusion for ideal running form on non-moving ground.
