Mouth is for eating nose is for breathing

I wasnt' very fast...
first part with 75% max heart rate
second part with 80% max heart rate
last km 85% (marathon heart rate)

it's one year now that I read Scott Jurek and John Douillard and that I'm playing that nose-breathing game
my friends told me that I'm the only one who look relaxed during the races, I guess it comes mainly from the bare feet but maybe also from the breathing, I dunno

time to beat a dead horse. i've learned a few things since this thread died out. i have notes available that i will try to post a link here from my patient diagnosis class.

it said a few things i've said. nose is for breathing, yada, yada. but what i didn't know is that when you breathe through your nose the air goes through the sinuses in your head and produce NO. nitric oxide kills bacteria. most. or some. NO also relaxes your arteries and expands them. this gets more blood which brings more O2 to your muscles. it's the main ingredient to a real popular medicine i'm sure you've all heard of. viagra, cialis. that's a bad thing, right?

i also went to a seminar to learn to do rehab. rehabilitation to performance. R2P. if you have any providers near you i highly recommend getting checked out. they borrow from Janda school of Prague, McGill. FMS, SFMS, PRI, DNS. lots of acronyms i'm not sure i can explain. functional movement screen, sport """, yeah, the other two i don't know.

they taught us to assess people's movement and finally their breathing. it was last but most important. i can't find the quote in the notes they gave us. i believe it was Janda who said "without proper breathing you have dysfunction everywhere."

i went through the 7 screens and failed almost everything miserably. i thought i would at least do well with breathing but my core is too weak. i thought my squat was good but i butt winked quickly. i've been working on my weakness so i can improve and run again. "core stability before distal mobility."

ok, i think my notes are too big for this. if anyone is really curious enough to read them i can email them. i may start another thread when i get results with everything that i'm doing so that others can ask questions and have some guidance.

Well, I usually breath through nose, but I have been having odd chest pain from outhaling through nose. Just few times, then I have to exhale through mouth and it just feels inefficient and laborous. I would guess that pain is nothing too serious, probably just too dusty at home and should clean bit more frequently.

I didn't consciously practice breathing through nose, I just one day realized that I'm doing so, I think I was concentrating on barefooting back then on that run (I remember that moment). I used to have clear rhythm on sync with footsteps, but with barefooting just couldn't do it, cadence got too fast. It took couple of years of barefooting before I got this realization. I would guess it's kinda hard to practise natural breathing through nose, because if you think about breathing, it immediately becomes conscious effort. It's prpbably better to just keep (tape) mouth shut and try to think something else.

Ske you still doing this? Any tips for getting rid of congestion? I feel like I have to blow my nose every minute.

Not exclusively, but yes i'm still nose breathing, I don't really think about it any more, everything is automatic, part of my technique now and slots in when i need it.

My only solution to congestion was pig headedness, which really isn't a solution, but eventually over time the congestion eased to the point where it wasn't a problem.

I get water build up in my nose that i clear regularly, but i think that would be expected because my nose is now moistening the air in the way that it should, but not something i'd consider to be congestion.

try netty pot and better diet. less/no grains/dairy. milk is the biggest mucus producer we ingest.

Ok that sounds about the same as I am experiencing. It feels more like water than congestion and I just carry a handkerchief with me. The main thing I learned is I have to slow down a little initially and get into a breathing groove to go faster.

Thanks mig, I don't drink milk. But I'll pass on the neti thing and go au natural with a tissue. I don't think its a congestion issue as much as a annoyingly continuous running nose.

I just cover one nostril with a finger and snort out, and repeat for the other side, no need for tissues. It doesn't break my running rhythm when i do that.
Good luck with the lake district, I find on those short steep climbs nose breathing has helped me a lot, for some reason i get less lactic buildup.
