I've been absent for a few weeks so thought I'd catch up. The last 3 weeks I've been on vacation, up to my folks in northern NY. Planned to do so much... without having to go to work for three weeks I was going to finally do a lot of running (beach and trail too!), biking, paddling, hiking... but unfortunately it rained almost the whole three weeks! I made the best of it though, getting out during the few hours of sunshine here and there and going on one trip to the mountains. Still a far cry from what I planned. Sucks that my running has been so limited due to my work schedule, and then when I finally have time it storms almost every day.

Last week I was able to cover 35mi on foot (10 running, 25 hiking) as well as 18mi on the bike and 5.3mi paddling.

Week before last 43.5mi on foot (29 running, 14.5 hiking) as well as 55mi on the bike.

Got lots of great pics from the beautiful places I visited, like from the Mountains, but will make a dedicated post on those separately. But here are some running pics...

Many miles of continuous beach can be run on state land. I had to turn back due to time but still was able to run over 8 miles of beach that day.

Storm clouds on the road I grew up on. A very common sight these past few weeks! They looked very ominous on my run that day so thought I'd at least grab a pic of them!

This week I'm back on nightshifts. :( :dead: And so far 0 miles of anything. Was wanting to run when I was up in the afternoon these past 2 days but stormed during both. Today we actually had 60+mph wind and tornado sirens going off! Of course as soon as I leave for work the sky turns brilliant blue and just gorgeous out. I'll get some flights of stairs in at least.

My last report was week 25! I didn't do much running at all for the two weeks afterwards. I had what felt like a bruise on my sole behind my right little toe. The sole was tender when I pressed it or stepped on it. It might have happened when I ran around my old HS athletic field in Queens NY at the end of April!!

Anyhow's, I was off the Friday before Independence Day so I began running BF again - 5.5 miles around Lake Merritt going to and from home. Sunday the fifth went another 5.5 in Folsom before it got too hot, another 4.2 mile on Monday morning, and a short 1.5 mile jaunt on Tuesday. Saturday, Efrem and I were joined by a new guy for our monthly Lake Merritt loop of about 3.6 miles. After the loop, I was ambitious and followed Efrem on a sprint but i dropped off as he continued speeding around the Lake for a second loop. Speed demon.

So far, this week I have run barefoot on Monday, Tuesday, and again today, Wednesday - 5.1, 3.5, and 6.9 miles, respectively (did I put that correctly?). I am off to Missouri for business in the morning so I don't know if I will run again this week. Maybe ...

4.3 miles went well on Tuesday, supplemented by spin bike + swimming on both Monday and Wednesday. The culprit calf still feels a bit tight, so will take my run with relaxed caution tomorrow AM.

First short 'test run' back for me today after a couple of sessions with the physio.
Felt really good to be running again -it felt right quite quickly (if that makes sense).

Shame to keep it so short (less than 2k!), but I thought I'd try doing what I've been advised and listen to the physio for once.;)
Hope the caution works for you HSB...

Had a lovely 6.2 miles run this morning. The leg loosened up quite a bit after the first mile. I think I was running nice and light, as I accidentally got within one foot of a feral cat on the preserve. Or, as my son so graciously pointed out, the cat was deaf. :p Swam 30 minutes in the afternoon and did some mixed endurance building/yoga/strength training yardword for a bit.

Earlier this week I was noticing how thick my pads got after my recent hike in the mountains barefoot, and yesterday (after a few days of little activity) they were really itching. And they were so thick I really couldn't satisfy the itch by normal means and eventually resorted to actually digging and scratched them a little with one of my house keys but decided I shouldn't do that too much. So yesterday I decided I'd give the chip seal roads around my house a go. This year my soles have been on the tender side without much other than smooth paved bike paths. And last time a couple months ago I did chip seal was only like 3 miles and my soles burned for 2 days straight after. :barefoot:

The first couple miles actually felt good! I did the 6mile loop from my house. The last couple miles were rough though, my soles still succumbed to the sharp chip seal. Didn't burn as bad as the last time but still a little tender after. But I remember why I hated going that way (besides the chip seal) - 1 of the sides of the 'square' is a state route that is pretty busy with traffic doing 60mph+ and not much shoulder to speak of - white line painted just a few inches from edge of road and the sides and ditches aren't really barefootable or runable period.

Today before I went in on the nightshift I got on the bike for an 8.2 mile loop.

I have the weekend off (yay!) and my son is spending it with his grandparents on my ex's side so hopefully I can get some longer runs in... if the weather holds out.

Friday, I ran a slow 7.1 with a lot of rough pavement. I've been avoiding it the last month or so, and my feet felt tender toward the end of the run, but they don't feel tingly or anything today, so it must not have been pushing it too much.

Saturday, I ran a faster, but relaxed, 7.1 on smoother asphalt. I had planned on 5 or 6, but that last mile was calling my name, as I started to feel really warmed up at mile 6!

The "highlight" of the run was around mile 5 when a skunk apparently didn't hear me coming and stepped out into the path not 10 feet in front of me. As I have mentioned, there are a lot of feral cats around there, so I had no idea it was a skunk at first. I have never come across one there before, but remember the lady that thought I was a skunk? ... It didn't see me until it was half way in the path, right as I was really putting on the breaks. I managed to come to a full stop before I got much closer to it. It raised it's tail, but my statue-like form must have convinced it to keep going without spraying. Phew!

That gives me 24.7 barefoot miles for the week, which I am happy with.

After my Saturday morning workout, I decided to take short run and logged another 3.8 miles. So I have a total of 19.4 barefoot miles for the week. My legs and feet appear to be holding up to the weekly mileage. I am crossing my fingers that I can keep it up.

Finished the week up with about 7 miles on the same gravel/grit trail as last week but this time it was right after a very heavy rain.

    Delicious!

Haven't been posting, but I have been running. :)
Did 12 km yesterday, a nice morning run.
Also completed a Spartan Sprint a month ago, wore my VFFs. Managed to finish 2nd in my age group. :)
For some silly reason, they ran the race on the side of a ski-hill...Lol

Friday later in the day after I was done with my nightshifts for the week I ran 6.5 miles at a slow pace. I generally feel like crap after the last nightshift. :hungover: Usually don't feel like doing anything other than sitting around behind the computer or tv with a beer, so good I was able to get out.

Saturday I was up before dawn and pumped to get a long bike ride in. Headed out about 7:30 for what I planned to be around 40 miles with a stop for breakfast at a diner at the turn around point. First time I biked that long, and first time I biked somewhere to eat. Was a little uncertain how my stomach would handle biking back after breakfast, so I ate somewhat light (for me). Didn't have any stomache problems after. As I was nearing the end of my journey I was surprised how I felt fine, and thought I could add some more to make it my first 50 miler. I went by my house and kept going, this time to another place that had ice cream cones. Still didn't have enough miles for 50 so I made some loops on the way back instead of going straight. 52.25!

Screenshot from 2015-07-18 13:17:21.png Total moving time was 3:30 so about 15mph average round trip. Was just taking it somewhat easy.

Today went out for a long-ish run. Haven't really done what I'd call a long run all year... 2 half marathons are the furthest and haven't run over 10 since the last one that was the first weekend in May! Planned to do around 12, actually did closer to 13. I'm signed up for an 18.12 mile race end of August so really got to get serious about the long runs. Even though about downgrading to the half but the race is a big event for me - and 2 states away - so if I am going to do it want to do the full thing and make it worth while trip! But time is short for much training now.

Week total: 25.8 mi barefoot running, 60.5 mi barefoot cycling
