Actually I met Sidy during a hard part of the Marathon when we had to cross a good 5k section of dirt trails between wheat fields. The sharp pebbles were so hard to manage that I had to "run" on the side, in the tall grass with uneven and hidden terrain. And while I was fighting my way through this, I saw a tall black guy struggling the same on the other side of the trail. We rapidly engaged in a conversation that lasted the remaining 2 hours, about barefoot running, human evolution, the relations between colonialism and christianity, especially how the white people finally granted the black people with a soul to have more zealots, and how it felt wrong in the 60s, with Malcom X and Mohamed Ali. Few people realize how Marathons could be so enriching when you do it gently.
I am planning to do the same this Sunday at the marathon de Lyon. Meeting people, sharing, gliding. Last year in the same Marathon, I beat my PR while teaching every 5k a group of 5-10 people how to run gently. I was so focused on good form to teach them that I discovered with m watch that I was faster than ever before. Another lesson that good form and easiness are keys to running economy and performance, while minimizing shock of course.
