I will assume the answer will be yes... but hear me out.

I started running in 2011 and by 2013 was wearing Altra Eve for my first half and full marathon. These were on the roads. I then started training for a tri, and ended up hurt. I transitioned back in to a more cushioned shoe, still zero drop Altra. Within the last month or so, I have worked my way back into a more minimal shoe, Skora. None of the little aches or pains have surfaced since I got back into them. I'm wondering if now is a good time to pull the trigger and go ahead and get sandals. And if I do, which ones? I have been doing some research, but would love feedback.

    Thanks in advance!

This isn't the most active chapter, I think I'd post this in Barefoot/Minimal Running forum if I were you.

What injury did you get training for the TRI? And how do you think it happened?

I strained a muscle so hard it bowed a bone in my leg! It was a nightmare. Of course, recovering from that I probably didn't have the best form.

    I'll post it there. Thanks

Perhaps it's time to bite the bullet and run bare?

I've tried a few times, but never stuck with it. The last time, I hit a bad patch of road and ripped up my foot. It's not a crazy idea for me though.

You have to go slow. Be patient. Good thinks come to those who are patient. Try again. The rough patches can teach you a lot about how to run gently, lightly. Just go slow.

Is it better to start in the grass, on dirt, or straight to concrete and roads?

The rougher stuff will teach you best how to run gently. Asphalt and concrete will teach you how to place your feet, where to place your feet, and how to place your weight over your feet. Try the harder and rougher stuff first. Change it up. Then when you are done with a good training session with those surfaces, run barefoot on the grass or sand for fun. Just be aware that things can hide in the grass and sand that you cannot see.

I started on asphalt, and my transition from there was good. It would have been better if I had thrown the shoes in the trash after that first run and never looked back, but I digress.

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll start with walking bare more often outside and work on toughing up the soles of my feet. I've got soft baby-like feet from too many years in shoes.

That's always a good start as well and surely wouldn't hurt.
