Forgot that TJ, but I do have to start thinking along this thread's initial premis.
June will come fast, and my first Grampa babysitting date is scheduled for her 6'th week post partum.
Maybe I'll plan a 1.5 month party, like a barefoot climb out of the playpen thing?

was Branson rapelling or abseiling? My understanding is that rapelling is face down, abseiling is face up?

Anyway, I've been to one indoor climbing wall with my sister and her boyfriend - they are both into rock climbing in a big way - and had great fun. My daughter, at that time 6 really enjoyed it and I can see how you could easily get the bug and spend a lot of money.

Just a little translation issue - Brits abseil, Americans rappel. Nothing to do with being upside down!

Then probably to him he was abseiling, but to the U.S. press he was rapelling.
I'm still not purchasing a ticket for the thrill ride though.

Yes exactly. Different terms for the same thing.
The official term for a face/head first rappel is "Tactical Rapelling" designed so you can shoot back at people who might be shooting at you as you descend. For people who aren't on a SWAT team or in the special forces, it's generally referred to as "Stupid".

I did't say I advocated it. Just wanted to be clear that Richard Branson may like his publicity stunts, but he's no bada$$.:)

Can I say bada$$ on here?

Awesome thread! You guys have already answered a ton of questions I've had for a while. I sort of fell in love with climbing a year ago but have still only managed to climb a handfull of times. The biggest hinderance for me is the shoes! They squished my toes so badly I had to take them off evey 10 minutes or so. The friend I was with is a fairly experienced climber and said that the shoes are specially designed to fit tightly so your point of contact is smaller. After this comment:
I'm wondering if there are minimalist shoes available that will allow me to clumb effectively without killing my newly aquired toe-spread, or am I just going to habe to learn to suck it up if I ever decide to get serious about climbing?

If anyone has any updates on this, I would be interested. Are there any 5-fingered shoes with better rubberising? I live round the corner from a climbing centre and have not used it for fear of squashing my feet.

    Thanks
