Run Strong Run Free: An Introduction to the science and art of barefoot running
Authors: Anna Toombs and David Robinson

Experienced barefoot runners and movement therapists, Anna Toombs and David Robinson, have written a book about barefoot running.

Run Strong Run Free: An Introduction to the science and art of barefoot running is a ‘why’ and ‘how’ book of running barefoot; why it works from both a physical and mental perspective and how to start and progress safely to achieve optimum running mechanics and enjoyment through moving your body without restriction.

The book begins (after a foreword kindly written by Professor Daniel Howell) with some basic anatomy and talks you through the human body as an interconnected structure. There’s a separate chapter on breathing for optimum posture and improved breath function. The book also tackles basic biomechanics, explaining why the human foot works best when it is able to ‘talk’ to the rest of the body without the disruption of shoes.

There are technical tips sprinkled throughout the book with a full section dedicated to technique, and there are guidelines about what to expect with regard to different types of weather and terrain. At the back of the book is an exercise section with photographs and instructions for movements and drills to improve mobility, balance, muscle elasticity and strength, plus some post-run stretches for you to try. There are also plenty of pictures and diagrams throughout the book to complement the text and bring the book to life.

Anna and David do not have an ‘anti-shoe’ approach. As is the case with the majority of barefoot/minimalist runners, they recognize that shoes have a role as necessary tools in certain situations. With that in mind, they’ve included a section in the book discussing the topic and the various beliefs within the shoe/no shoe debate.

Their experience tells them that injuries occur for all sorts of reasons and injuries relating to poor technique (rather than direct trauma) will not be fixed overnight by running barefoot. However, they believe that it is easiest to find optimum technique without anything on your feet and you will also discover more about your body without any obstructions. Fundamentally, their goal is for the book to help people to find enjoyment in running and be able to do it for the rest of their lives. They hope that it will provide all the information an individual needs to begin or progress their barefoot running journey and inspire them to keep experimenting, learning and above all, having fun!

Anna and David are teaching one-day workshops throughout the UK based on the book. Please visit the Barefoot Running UK website for more information on dates and venues. You can also purchase the book from this website or go directly to the publishing website (TRC Publishing UK).

This book sounds like it might be great to share with my Arizona barefoot crew. Especially the drills and such for strength and balance.
