Those are SHOES

It's sargassum, a kind of seaweed aka brown alga from the Caribbean. It washes up on the beach all the time along with Portuguese Man-o-War, hence the shoes.

Portuguese M-O-W ... I think that ranks as one of the most valid reasons to wear (really thick) shoes. What would KenBob say?

Nah, you can probably just wear socks and they won't get you. The nematocysts in most cnidarians (nasty stingy sea creatures) don't penetrate more than a few cell layers in most cases. Now sand spurs on the other hand....

And now for something completely different: What are you feeding those moose in MN? New England moose scat looks way more like chocolate covered Brazil nuts than a cow patty, since a moose is just a big deer. Are you sure what you stepped in came from a moose? Maybe he just ate a bunch of water plants and they didn't agree with him?
