Experiment in Running Through the Pain with Barefoot Techniques –
Evaluating the Pain - Parts 1 & 2
By Happysongbird

The body is very reliable about sending signals of discomfort. Whether you call it anything from pain to tightness, the brain gets the message and pesters you with it. I categorize these discomforts in ways that help me decide how to proceed with my activities.

For the first lap, I struggled to find a warm-up pace that didn’t aggravate my knee. I knew from past experiences that a quicker pace can feel better, but my muscles would appreciate some time to activate before I got going toooo fast. By the end of lap 2, I had loosened up AND found an nonpainful rhythm!

As I tried to analyze my success, I came up with the following factors.

Nice post Laura! My left MCL is a lot like your latest niggle. Active recovery definitely helps, but it's tricky figuring out just how much is too much, and which kinds of exercise are good or bad for it. I've been surprised to find that squats and leg extensions actually seem to help it, and that rest in general, as you point out, may actually hinder the healing process. A few weeks ago the MCL would bother me after a run, especially when I lay down to go to bed, but lately the post-run soreness is almost completely non-existent :wtf: .

Great post, Laura! I'm squarely in the camp that says the healing is in the motion and "wer rastet der rostet", a rolling stone gathers no moss, lol.
I do believe that one of your recent comments along those lines is one of the things that helped me to think this through differently than I had before.
