TJ, Quin is running the women's 400 meter race and the leadoff leg of the women's 4x4 relay Saturday at the Cody McBride Invitational barefooted!

She must have lightning fast bare feet for her to run 400 meter sprint races like this!

    Saturday(3/24):

Texas Tech's Nokuthula Dlamini and Central Arizona's Ikageng Gaorenkwe both sat out their respective teams' meets due to rest-related reasons. Dlamini has yet to compete for her team during the outdoor season so far.

Mesa's Quin Johnson finished 3rd in the women's 400 meter race(1:01.89) and ran the leadoff leg of the women's 4x4 relay in her customary bare feet at the Cody McBride Invitational. The relay she ran in consisted of,get this, only 2 teams(Mesa and Arizona Christian) competing.

Early start this week (Easter weekend):

One meet starts today as Hawkeye CC freshman Joanna Topham competes at the Central College Invitational in Pella,IA. She is scheduled to run barefoot tonight in either the women's 1500 meters race or the women's 10,000 meter race and tomorrow in the women's 1500,3000, or 5000 meter races(Heat sheets not posted yet, so not sure which race(s) she is in.) Hawkeye CC just entered this invite yesterday as a replacement for their originally scheduled meet at Wartburg College, which was cancelled due to slow melting snow cover after last weekend's big snowstorm in Iowa.

    Weekend review:

Central College Invitational - Hawkeye CC freshman Joanna Topham won her heat in the women's 1500 in 5:21.67(10th overall),and finished 2nd in her heat in the women's 800 in 2:29.76(10th overall). Unfortunately, due to cold and windy conditions, she had to wear shoes instead of going barefooted.

ACCAC Championship (Arizona) - Mesa CC freshman Quin Johnson finished 2nd in women's 800(2:30.85),2nd in women's 1500(5:07.86),and 7th in women's 5000(22:09.31). She ran all three races barefooted!

Raleigh Relays - Coastal Carolina's Lisha van Onselen ran barefoot in the women's 1500. The event had a whopping 105 entrants over 7 heats. Lisha finished 76th overall in a time of 4:44.77(11th in her heat).

Central Arizona's Ikageng Gaorenkwe won the men's 3000 steeplechase at the ACCAC Championship meet in 9:54.70,qualifying him for the NJCAA national outdoor meet. He ran in spikes instead of going barefooted due to a injury.

Mobile(AL) Invitational - South Alabama's Nicole van der Merwe finished 2nd in the women's 3000 in her usual barefoot with taped feet in 11:07.27.

There is the latest! Another week coming up.

    Today:

Coastal Carolina's Lisha van Onselen withdrew from the women's 5000 meter race at the East Carolina Invitational. Likely because of some inclement weather conditions at the meet(rain and some storms), couldn't run barefoot on a wet track.

Mesa CC's Quin Johnson ran barefooted in the women's 800 meter race at the Arizona State Sun Angel Classic Invitational meet. She finished 5th in the first of 3 heats in the event(finished 19th overall) in a time of 2:26.66.

    Friday(April 13):

Coastal Carolina's Lisha van Onselen competed barefoot in the women's 1500 meter race at the University of Florida Tom Jones Invitational. She finished 6th in the 2nd of 2 heats and 7th overall in a time of 4:38.04.

Hawkeye CC's Joanna Topham finished 2nd in her heat and 3rd overall in the women's 1500 meter race at the Mount Mercy Invitational. Due to cold temps and windy conditions, Joanna had to run in shoes instead of barefoot (temps have been cold in that part of the country this spring, so she has been unable to run barefoot in a meet yet). Her time was 5:14.21.

    April 13(continued):

Mesa CC's Quin Johnson finished 2nd in both the women's 800 meter race (2:24.79) and the women's 1500 meter race (4:55.98) at the Mesa Community College Invitational. She ran both races,as usual, in her bare feet. (Confirmation from her teammate Kara Dale via DM on Instagram) Her 1500 time has qualified her for the NJCAA outdoor national meet in mid-May in Kansas.

South Alabama's freshman runner Nicole van der Merwe finished 16th running barefooted with taped feet in a big field of competitors in the women's 5000 meter race at the Auburn Tiger Invitational. Her time was 18:32.06.

Weather in some areas forced meets to be moved up this week.

An adjustment to a previous post:

Coastal Carolina's Lisha van Onselen ran her 1500 meter race at Florida in spikes, not barefoot as previously posted. One of her teammates posted a pic on IG confirming this. Temps were in the 80s,making the track surface very hot.She was advised to run in spikes due to these conditions.

TJ, I have a unexpected barefoot sighting:

Earlier today(April 21), Our Lady of the Lakes senior distance runner Jazmine Garcia ran and won the women's 10,000 meter race at the Red River Athletic Conference outdoor track and field meet in her bare feet!

There is a video clip of her running the final 150 meters to the finish line barefooted amongst a package of photos and videos that she posted to her Instagram page.( Her Instagram page is: leighjazmine)

I will post the barefoot pics on the Facebook page.

She ran at least one of the other distance races with shoes.(She won the 3000,5000,& 10,000 meter races and finished 6th in the 800 along with a 8th in the 1500).

    Also this weekend:

Hawkeye CC's Joanna Topham finished 3rd in her heat and overall in the women's 1500 meter race in 5:04.54 and ran the 2nd leg of the 4x4 relay which took 4th in 4:33.25 at the Dubuque Invite. She was scheduled to run the women's 3000 steeplechase, but was pulled out due to a coach's decision. Due to continuing cool temps in the Midwest, she wore shoes.

Coastal Carolina's Lisha van Onselen won the women's 3000 meter race at the South Carolina Open meet. She ran barefooted in a time of 9:56.09.

South Alabama's Nicole van der Merwe did not compete at the War Eagle Invite at Auburn(rest).

Texas Tech's Nokuthula Dlamini is out for the season officially due to injury.

Will post a pic of Lisha on the Facebook page.

I have their schedules on me and then I look up each week to see where they are.
Once that happens, l then go to the websites of the schools hosting those meets to find the pre-meet heat sheets and results.

Sometimes they get found in some unexpected places.

The one this weekend with OLLU's Jazmine Garcia came from her Instagram account. I discovered through the photos, video, and(get this) a comment from someone asking her specifically, "You still run without shoes?", that Jazmine had run barefoot in the women's 10,000 meter race. She did run in shoes for all three races the next day, which leads me to think that either she didn't feel like wearing shoes for the 2 Friday races(she also ran the women's 3000 meters) or that she may have forgotten her shoes at the team hotel and had to run barefoot.

    Non-meet related news:

Hawkeye CC freshman runner Joanna Topham was recently named Female Athlete of the Year by the school for her performances in cross country and track and in the classroom as well.
Might have to ask her if she wants to try running cross country meets barefoot in the fall. She will be back to Hawkeye CC for the 2018-19 school year.

It seems to me that most of the runners you report on are female. Do you not see as many males running in meets/competitions barefoot?

For some reason, the men seem to be reluctant about competing barefooted in college in part because schools have shoe contracts with their athletes and they are accustomed to it anyway due to national high school rules requiring shoes at meets. Don't know what else to tell you. Was thinking about this myself, as a matter of fact.

Friday update: Hawkeye CC's Joanna Topham competed today at the Simpson College Kip Janvrin Open track meet. She finished 10th in her heat and 24th overall out of 51 total runners(4 heats) in the women's 1500 meters and 5th in her heat and 19th overall out of 28 runners in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase - she did suffer a slight sprained ankle on the final water jump, according to a IG post just up late this evening(she wore spikes). Not sure if she ran shoes or no shoes in 1500.

She is actually doing an event double this weekend as she is headed tomorrow morning to the prestigious Drake Relays to run a leg in the women's distance medley relay. Will let you know tomorrow how she holds up with her ankle as well as getting her finishing times for the 2 aforementioned races.

Pure guess, but thinking that it would be possible that she would have to run barefoot in order just to compete b/c of her ankle.

Update this AM: Joanna Topham (Hawkeye CC) attempted to run the anchor leg of the women's distance medley relay at the Drake Relays this morning, but her sprained ankle from yesterday caused her to drop out during the leg and the team ended up with a DNF. Will be looked at this week, may have to miss their meet next weekend which ends her season most likely.

    Elsewhere this past week:

Joanna Topham times from Friday - 5:06.21 in 1500
    12:41.78 in 3000 steeplechase

Jazmine Garcia(OLLU) - was scheduled to run women's 5000 at Texas State Bobcat Classic, was withdrawn prior to race(coaches decision).

Nicole van der Merwe(South Alabama) - finished 2nd (of 4) in women's 3000 at the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagle Classic running, what else, barefoot with taped toes. She was scheduled to run women's 1500 as well, was withdrawn(coach decision). Her time was 10:38.47 in the 3000.

Lisha van Onselen(Coastal Carolina) - won women's 5000 meter race at the Appalachian State Invitational in 18:21.58. She ran in shoes instead of bare feet because temperatures on the track were very hot considering that it was the first track race of the day.

Quin Johnson of Mesa CC was off in preparation for her team's regional meet this week(Tuesday and Thursday).

Will keep an eye on Joanna Topham's ankle injury this week to see if she gets cleared to compete or not.

Light week this week with some runners getting ready for conference meets or other postseason meets down the line.

Hawkeye CC's Joanna Topham was unable to compete at her team's regional meet due to the ankle injury previously mentioned. Her season is ended unless there is a qualification from a previous event that I'm unaware of.

Coastal Carolina's Lisha van Onselen and South Alabama's Nicole van der Merwe were both off this weekend in preparation for the Sun Belt outdoor conference meet beginning Thursday at Texas State.

Our Lady of the Lake's Jazmine Garcia was also off, but for a good reason. She officially graduated from the school this weekend. Will check to see if she has qualified for the NAIA national outdoor track meet later this month in any of the distance events.

Central Arizona's Ikageng Gaorenkwe and Mesa CC freshman runner Quin Johnson both competed in the NJCAA regional outdoor track meet. Ikageng won the men's 3000 steeplechase in 9:26.11 running barefooted. He also finished 3rd in the men's 5000 meters in 15:44.30 and 6th in the men's 1500 meters in 4:07.15, running both races barefooted. Quin, meanwhile, ran the 2nd leg of the women's 4x8 relay in 2:21.29(team ran 10:16.66 - only team in the event),won the women's 800 meters in 2:17.15,and finished 3rd in the women's 5000 meters in 19:50.83, all in her bare feet!

Both Ikageng and Quin are already qualified for the NJCAA national outdoor meet in Kansas on the 17th,18th, & 19th in multiple events. More from them then.
