Who can remember some of the current and former collegiate cross country runners that competed in bare feet during their careers? I have one right away. How about Michelle Dekkers (Maton), who won the individual NCAA title barefoot in 1988 for Indiana.

If anyone else has others to mention, please add them to the list.l'd like to get this list up to as many people as we can think of.

I will add another couple more people while I'm thinking about it. An NAIA college in Indiana called Grace College produced a pair of barefoot runners in Marijean Wegert (Sanders) and Rachel Fehring (Huhta).

Marijean competed barefoot for Grace from 2008 to 2011 and serves as an assistant coach for them now.

Rachel competed barefoot for Grace in 2013 after running in shoes earlier in her career.

Barefoot TJ, do you know of anyone who ran barefoot in college that can be added to the list off hand that hasn't been named already?

Another runner for you now on the list: Leanda du Bruyn of California Baptist (now D1 NCAA) finished 22nd in 2016 NCAA D2 West Regional cross country meet running in bare feet.

She is considering competing in her bare feet this season in her meets, according to what she has told me via social media.

I do not specifically. Are you considering runners from around the world?

They can be runners from outside the United States or from the United States, as long as they attended and competed at a college in the United States. Some of the earlier mentions were from South Africa, where they are accustomed to competing on grass barefoot.

Found another runner for the list - Jazmine Garcia from Our Lady of the Lakes University in Texas, which is an NAIA school. She competed in last year's NAIA national championship meet in Illinois in bare feet. Not sure if she forgot her shoes or if she lost them on the course.

Losing their shoes or just one shoe during the race seems to be a common theme. Ha!

Adding another person to the list from the past-

Sonel Bezuidenhout (Harris) ran her freshman season of cross country at Tennessee Tech in 2015 barefoot. She has given up cross country to concentrate on academics.

Barefoot TJ, I found out about this note this morning. I mentioned that Monica Redfern was competing for Lake Forest College in Illinois previously. Just learned via her Instagram profile that she is sitting out this season because she has transferred. She will be competing at Arizona State starting in 2018 and has 2 years of eligibility left(2018,2019- will graduate in 2020).

I remember that Luther College in Iowa had a young lady in Tessa Kraus who competed for them (2011-14) in cross country and ran all of her races in bare feet.

There was also a runner from St. Catherine's College in Minnesota who competed shoeless for a year. Her name was Ailee Larson and she competed from 2011 to 2013. She ran in shoes in '11 and '12, then decided in her final year in '13 to run meets in bare feet. She competed barefoot all season, even winning the Minnesota IAC conference title(in her bare feet) until the NCAA D3 national meet, when she went back to shoes.Sadly Ailee hurt her back in the nationals w/ the shoes and had her worst race of the season.

In that same meet, another runner actually did compete in her bare feet. Her name was Adele Eslinger from Claremont Mudd Scripps. She had run in one previous race that season barefooted (a conference preview meet).

Northwestern College in Iowa had a runner named Sarah Wittenberg who,at that same time, also competed in a few meets off and on running barefoot, including the 2014 Roy Griak invite in Minnesota.

Here is another one - Cornell had a runner named Julie Howarth who competed in cross country w/ shoes her first 3 seasons, then her senior season she changed over to running in bare feet. She competed in a couple of meets barefooted, including a meet w/ Army.

Add this to the list: William Penn College (Iowa) had a runner in Lilly Walters, who ran for 2 years. She ran most of her meets barefoot during that time. She has since transferred to Schreiner University near her home in Texas, but is not on the cross country team there.

New college cross country season starts up in a couple of weeks. Barefoot TJ, if you or anyone else (including myself) come across any items involving runners competing barefoot in meets, make certain to add those items to this thread. Lots of checking around will be done.
