Calf Problem....HELP

I've suffered recently from a reoccurance of an old calf tear - just a strain this time. I rested and massaged and then when I got back to running, I've played around with my gait and have found that if I run on a softer surface (trails not paved paths) and really concentrate on my gait, I seem to avoid putting stress on that part of my calves. I'm not too sure, but I'm still experimenting with my BF running style and I think I may have been leaning too far forward and taking too big strides.

Any thoughts from the more experienced? I seem to remember that newbies can suffer from calve problems.
