BOONE (AP) — A long-distance runner who doesn't wear shoes is trying to run across North Carolina to draw attention to state budget cuts.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported today that 29-year-old Matt Jenkins planned to leave Manteo today for a 760-mile journey ending in the mountains. Jenkins estimates he'll run about 30 miles a day over four weeks.

Jenkins works at an after-school program for the Western Youth Network in Boone that provides mentoring and summer programs. He decided the run could raise awareness about spending cuts to programs for young people.

Jenkins says after years of running barefoot he can handle hot pavement and pebbles. But he'll take a break if he comes across any freshly laid asphalt.
