    Minimal Shoes Aren't Great

I was active on this site a few years ago, but fell away. The short version of a long story is that after transitioning to full-on barefoot running, I decided it was not for me. I began to run exclusively in minimal shoes such as the New Balance Minimus and Merrell Vapor Glove. I did fairly...

    Fellowship of the Morton's Toe

Hi. My name is Mike and I have Morton's Toe. I had been racking up some good mileage in VFF and barefoot lately. A couple weeks ago, my second toe started to get numb and tingly, started to hurt and began drifting toward the big toe. I thought this was all due to an injury to that toe 15 or so...

    Headlamps?

I use this for street and bike path running. I like the red flashing light in the back. http://blackdiamondequipment.com/en/headlamps-and-lanterns/sprinter-headlamp-BD620608TITMALL1.html

Dont you worry about stepping on glass ?

Rocks have been the worst for me. I've been felled twice, in my short barefoot running career, by landing on a rock with my heel--the same heel. Like Tristan said, I wasn't expecting or looking for rocks, and like Laura said, I re-injuried that same place several times.

Mileage reporting 35th week of 2013

The sidewalk here is 3' wide with some very little being 5' wide. Some is adjacent to the street while other is set back 3' or so. Every 50' or so is a driveway approach (about 12' wide) where the slope starts at the street and rises 8" (to yard level) within the 3' width of the sidewalk. Some...

Barefoot Not Best For Most Runners??...

That article is intellectually dishonest to say the least. His "sample" of barefoot runners seems to be flawed. His observation that barefooters run fewer miles may be due to many reasons, if it's true. Many runners come to barefooting as a result of injuries, serious injuries. Many are also...

    Dangerous Fad

My new job is counter sales at an old-school lumber yard. Last week the owner of a prominent local running shoe store came in. I recognized him and we chatted a bit about running. I told him I was experimenting with"minimal" running and he warned me to be careful and that it is a dangerous...

Mileage Reporting 33rd week of 2013

A somewhat disappointing week. 18 miles total; 5.5 barefoot and 12.5 in VFFs. It was going well and I was feeling good and hoping for a couple more runs, but I landed on a rock with my heel--again while running barefoot. I got a high-powered headlight last weekend to avoid this type of thing. It...

Mileage Reporting 32nd Week of 2013

22.5 miles total this week: 16.25 in VFFs and 6.25 barefoot. Not as good as last week, but still good. I only got to run, jog really, 4 times. Times were much slower than I like, but I was able to increase my barefoot running in relation to the VFF running. This morning, I was able to run...

Mileage Reporting 32nd Week of 2013

I'm glad to see that you are taking it easy before the tri (!) I would kill (well, almost) for 7:45 mile. Good work! I felt something similar after Tuesday's run. I wasn't feeling great and it was a tough run. My shoulders were sore the rest of the day from, I think, my trying to "run light."

Mileage Reporting 31st Week of 2013

Nice . . . a hummin Cummins. Cool sounding engine. If I recall, that was quite the engine back in the day. Good luck with the CDL and have fun.

Mileage Reporting 31st Week of 2013

Sounds like a great pre-race workout. Great times too. Don't overdue the knee this week and you'll have that tri knocked.

What a cool truck. Do you need a CDL to drive it? Details please (engine, tranny, etc). I drove and worked around trucks in a past life. Nothing military though.

Mileage Reporting 31st Week of 2013

An excellent week of running; almost 25 miles total with 18 (ish) in VFFs and 6.5 barefoot. All of the barefoot running was on old rough pavement. In the words of Runlite01:

Josh McDougal is a Perfect Example of What is Wrong With High School Track

I tried nose-only breathing on this morning's run. It started off great then at about a mile, my nose started running. Without getting too graphic, lets just say it didn't work and I went to mouth breathing. I don't if its related, but heart rate was low for entire run. I'm thinking of...

    Beginners cadence questions

Well said! When I first started working toward minimal running, I got a Garmin FR60 with a heart rate monitor and a footpod. I quickly got my cadence to, and sometimes over 180. As I progressed to more minimal shoes a high cadence, at times, would cause hip trouble. I quit worrying about...

Run Tracking - Garmin Vs Apps

I had a very basic Garmin FR60 and with the optional "footpod" it tracked cadence. The footpod can also be calibrated to give approximate distance as well.

Mileage Reporting 30th Week of 2013

Slow week. 8.5 miles total with 7 in VFFs and the rest barefoot. We got a torrential downpour early Thursday morning (3+ inches in a couple of hours in one part of town). In addition to the 97% humidity (in the desert!), the rain washed a lot of debris onto the paths and roads. Still too...

Run Tracking - Garmin Vs Apps

I've actually never used that feature. My runs are what they are. I usually just look at the data after runs.
