    February sun

I got out for my first BF run of the year a couple days ago when we got a flash of spring with temps in the mid 70's. I've been doing my runs in Vibrams, and doing my best avoid road salt -my feet's nemesis. I only did a little over a mile BF, and stopped to put on my shoes as a matter of...

    JosephTree from PA, USA

Hi I'm sort of new to BFR, having only gotten into it in 2010. Someone with this same avatar and user name used to come and hang around here quite a bit a looonnnggg time ago. Maybe he suffered an acute bandwidth crisis and stopped posting, but was still here in spirit.... I'm still running...

    Amazing kids...update

This Sunday morning all three of us (Emmett (16) Rowan (14) and I) are signed up to run a 5k Trail Run. It will be my son's first race. I am reasonably sure that both he and his sister will run faster than I will. Sigh...

    Amazing kids

I am stunned by recent developments. My 2 older kids decided that running is actually a GOOD THING and they have jumped in with both feet. My son, 16, saw a flyer for a 5K Trail Run in October and told me he'd like to do it. Then he asked me to take him for a training run the next morning...

    Vacation runs (the good kind)

I was blessed with a week off and got to spend most of it in Maine with my 3 kids, an hour or so east of Portland. Cool mornings and crisp air made for some first class runs. I even love the pavement on the roads there - baby smooth! My favorite run was out the front door, along the coast...

    Summer Running

I got out late last Saturday morning, at 08:00 instead of the 06:00 that might have saved me some misery. The temp was up to 85F and the humidity about 80%, and I thought to just run what I'd planned on doing - a 7 miler on my nearest paved and gravel trail (The Schuylkill River Trail). I...

    Getting back in the swing

I had my best run of the year last night. I took off at about 7 PM from a parking lot at Valley Forge National Park (outside Philadelphia, PA, USA) just as a light rain started. It seemed that everyone else was frightened away by the rain and a couple rumbles of thunder. I had the whole...

    Doldrums

It's sad but true that I just find it so hard to get my butt outside to run in the winter. I see people out running in the cold, snow, rain and darkness and can only admire them and turn away. I know I'm just at my low point here, but maybe putting in out in writing will help vent the...

    Salt!

I went out my front door for a run yesterday with my Vibrams in my hands, just in case. I only got a block up the road when I found both the road and sidewalk scattered with unmelted rock salt chunks. They HURT! On went the VFFs, and they stayed there for the rest of my run. I think salt...

    Temps and sensitivity

My feet were much more sensitive to rough pavements today than they'd been all season. I am suspecting that cooler ground temperatures are having an effect on my tolerance. The surfaces are the same ones I've been running on since last July. Anyone else have an opinion?

    Me and My Maf Zone

I tried out a friend's HRM last Sunday and have never had a more frustrating yet interesting run. FWIW, I hereby declare that I don't believe anybody can tell their HR without a monitor, at least without a lot of practice with one. I thought I was running easily within my Maf zone based just...

    Maine holiday

I'm just back from a week's holiday in Southeastern Maine. I have to give the Maine DOT praises for their superior job in paving the state road at the end of my gravel lane. The new pavement was only a week old and was so smooth it felt like running on leather. It was like a vacation for my...

    Too much sweat?

With the arrival of full summer here in south eastern Pennsylvania, I have sifted my running to evenings and the occasional weekend morning. In either time slot I have found recently that I am sweating so much that my feet are leaving wet foot prints. I don't mind that at all, but I think that...

    BF Surprise!

Yesterday evening I had the great pleasure of encountering 2 new BF runners at my favourite venue, Valley Forge National Park. Well, 1 and a half - one of them was in VFFs. They were father and son, father being from near Bethlehem and son from Phoenixville. Father has been running BF for more...

    IBRD stunner!

IBRD Stunner! By JosephTree I had no plan to connect with my BF brethren this IBRD. Life has been way too...rich, let's say, and I am just happy to get out running on some sort of regular basis. Then last week my son, 14 years and 11 months old, comes home from school telling me that he'd...

    Overdid it.

A couple evenings ago I went over to Valley Forge Park with my son. He's not any sort of runner but I enticed him with the promise of throwing an Aerobee (a flat toriodal throwing disc) for a while. When he'd had enough of that I took off running on a 6 mile loop on the road and paved paths...

    What I hate about spring

I had forgotten how much I hate getting my feet back into condition, and only realized yesterday why it sucks quite so much. The reason is that it's SPRING! While it should be lovely and fair - tra la! - no matter how nice the sun and air are, the roads and trails I frequent are still full...

    Rebuilding...

This afternoon I ran my second fully BF run of the spring. My first, last Thursday, was just a bit over a mile on pavement. Today was 2 miles and a bit. I was interested to notice that while my feet held up fine, my calves and shins were feeling strained. I've never felt this discomfort before...

    Shod shock indicator

Bless it, today was my first truly barefoot run (a little over a mile on pavement plus about 5 more in VFF Bikilas) of the year, as the temps popped up to the high 60's (F) this afternoon. It was also my first shirtless run. An interesting part of the run was when a well lycra-ed and...
