'Barefoot Running' author Michael Sandler finds meaning in 2nd life-altering injury since 2006

Um, so because he doesn't drink cow's milk it's automatically assumed that he has a calcium deficiency? If his vegan diet is anything like mine, he likely gets more than he would were he on a standard American diet (SAD). And of much higher quality and bioavailability. Not to be a jerk about it...

Shotgun Journalism re: Barefoot Driving. Every Base Covered

I always drive barefoot. Definitely feel more sure-footed than with shoes. My highly unscientific (and untested) view is that, between a bare foot and one shod in a 6" stiletto, my money is on the bare foot in terms of safety. But I do keep a pair of VFFs in the car in the event of a zombie...

    My IBRD experience.

Great job! If that gravel slowed you down, your time didn't show it. Alternatively, how much faster would you have run on a regular old road? :) In any event, you done good!

If you hosted an IBRD or attended one, please report in with numbers, pictures, and details!

Our report is here (not wanting to be redundant): http://thebarefootrunners.org/threads/san-diego-ibrd-5k-run.13903/

    San Diego IBRD 5K Run

Man, I hope I'm not stepping on anybody's toes by posting this report. I figured since someone else (graciously) took the initiative to pull this together, I could return the favor and write up a brief snapshot of the San Diego IBRD celebration. Feel free to add to my report, fellow attendees...

    Cramps

I have. In fact, I usually use it as a base for my smoothies. I don't much care for it by itself, so I wouldn't use it as liquid during a race. But you're right; have to figure out how to flavor it so I can use it for electrolyte replacement. That would solve two problems at once.

    Cramps

Thanks for that. Being a vegan, with a serious green smoothie addiction, it's hard for me to imagine how I could get more fruits and veggies into my system. I'm focusing on my sodium intake, which, apart from that which occurs in my diet, has always been fairly low (just never got into the salt...

Barefoot (Mostly) 50-Mile Endurance Run Race Report

The perfect read to start International Barefoot Running Day! Congratulations on a great achievement, giving hope for us blister-prone barefoot runners everywhere. Congratulations -- wear your jacket proudly. Brother, you earned it.

    Cramps

I have a banana in my daily green smoothie...but never knew there was a particular way to peel them. What's the idea behind peeling from the bottom?

    Cramps

Yeah, salt tablets are about the only thing I haven't tried, so in prep for my next race, I'll have to incorporate that into my training plan. And of course, move this thread to Health. I need to pay more attention to where I post things! ;)

    Cramps

Maybe this question isn't necessarily related to barefoot running, but, I believe, barefoot running may hold a solution, so here goes: I sweat. A lot. And, in longer races, I tend to cramp, debilitatingly so, almost always in the calves. This has happened to me for many years. It did so again...

    My next race accoutrements

Thanks, skedaddle, and no, you're most likely right. I always think I'm hydrated enough, based on the (lack of) color and frequency of my urine but this always seems to happen after about mile 7 (but, strangely, only in races. Never had it happen on a long run, even well-past 7 miles). I haven't...

    My next race accoutrements

Yep, those toes have been the bane of my running life, shod and otherwise, for many years. And yep, I finished the run, once again differently than how I planned and then re-planned it. The short version is I never took the minshoes off. The good news is that on a particularly difficult...

    Three Creeks 10K

Congratulations on a great finish time, which I trust you are happy with. As for your partner's coming over to the dark side, I have to say that if she's not willing to listen to her dog's advice, there's precious little you'll ever be able to say to convince her. :)

    My barefoot training ground!

I'm officially not going to complain about chipseal conditions any more after having a look at that. I'm also going to use that photo as motivation and a training goal. Thanks for that, damn you. :)

    My next race accoutrements

Oh just fuck it. I carried shoes on my very first barefoot race in case I needed to put them on (I didn't). Nothing says that I can't start off this race in minshoes and TAKE THE DAMNED THINGS OFF at some point after that gnarly hill. I've a feeling I'm going to want to do that in the later...

    My next race accoutrements

If you do, I must insist that it be conducted with the utmost scientific rigor, keeping the margin of error under +/-2%, then reviewed by Nate Silver to ensure that any and all statistical outliers have been accounted for. Or, we can just agree that, yeah, I'm a weenie, and save us all the...

    My next race accoutrements

Chipseal in and of itself is bearable at this point in my bf development. Most of the course for this race would be run on chipseal of some form or another. But the stuff I encountered on this particular portion of the course -- an infamously tough uphill portion that the race is known for --...

    My next race accoutrements

Well, the best laid plans... Maybe it was a mistake, but I scoped out the course for the race this weekend. I've run it before, but never barefoot, and I was curious to see what the conditions were like once the course left the road and ascended Torrey Pines Hill trail. Well, to make it short...
