    Berkeley Half Marathon 2019

Right on! Unfortunately, I moved to Santa Cruz in 2014, because of work. I really liked Oakland though, I lived in Rockridge. I'll join the Bay Area Barefoot Runners Club on Strava.

    Berkeley Half Marathon 2019

Nice time! I ran it, too, in 1:57:37, which is a 2 min PR for me. I passed one other barefooter, European descent, so it seems like there were at least four of us. I think I'll write up a report as well this week.

    Lems Boulder Boots review

I got those for the California "winter" and I agree with everything Tristan says here. They ended up being pretty good with all the record rainfall we had. Despite the fact that they aren't waterproof, there was only one occasion where I had to let them dry out before wearing again.

Dry, dead, cracking shin on your heels!

I had this problem for a few months recently and it went away when I started using a foot moisturizer with urea. My thought was that all the soaping I do after runs was removing the natural oils or whatever.

    Science Friday discussion of shoes

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I didn't see one concerning media coverage. Science Friday is one of my favorite radio shows, so I was happy to hear this one recently about shoe technology, and some discussion of barefoot running. They had a Nike shill scientist discussing shoe...

Road De-Icing Fluids May Contain Carcinogens

If you live in a place that has to deal with ice on roads, you might want to wait for some rains before running barefoot on the road. Depending on the source of the fluid, it could contain radium, or other nasty chemicals. (Scientific American) Now, whether radium can be absorbed through the...

How much duct tape is still barefoot?

This. There is something to be said to addressing the problem, rather than just the symptoms. I've had cracking problems before, and fixed them by moisturizing my foot, like Sid, and by using a pumice bar to sand down my calluses after I take a shower.

    Strange forefoot/2nd met pain

kozz, how did this turn out? I've been having some pain at the end of my 2nd metatarsal myself, I hope it's not Frieberg's. My pain is weird. I was having some in training for a half marathon I ran on November 24th, so I took off a week before the half and had no problems during/after the...

Run for Education 5k, San Ramon, CA

Thanks, murls and Duplo. 20:50 was fast for me, but I am always reading that anyone can run under 20 if they train consistently (30 mpw for a year or so), so there's plenty of room for improvement I think.

    Gritty Achillies?

Bummer, I got those exact symptoms in June of last year and it was diagnosed as tendinitis of the Achilles. It took 8 weeks of not running, rolling, icing, and physical therapy to clear up. The physio said my left hip was weak and so I did stretching and calf and hip strengthening exercises as...

Could barefoot road running cause cancer?

I think there's some merit in that line of thought, but we live far longer than cats or dogs, and have different biology, of course. Plus, I don't know about you, but I get cuts/abrasions/blisters on my feet once every three months or so during a run, whereas paws seem to be hardier. I...

Could barefoot road running cause cancer?

I try to avoid busy roads for the same reason. Ah, I should have thought to consult an MSDS. Sounds like old asphault should be pretty safe to run on, as long as a lot of quartz dust isn't being kicked up, so that goes back to your second point again. This is still just informed guesswork...
