Wildlife Half Marathon 2011By John "stjohnthegambler" Yohe I like having races almost in my back yard: I get up at six o’clock and that feels like a...
  2. Altra Superior

Watch out for the sizing in the Altra Superiors, at least on Men's shoes. I wear an 11 in everything including Altra Instincts, but in the Altra Superior, I wear a 12! I took out the inserts and laid them on top of each other, and they were *exactly* the same size. Some people here recommend...
  3. Barefoot Walking Technique

I walk barefoot on sidewalks with a light heal strike. If the surface is less even or covered with leaves, I naturally switch to forefoot, which lets me better absorb sharp objects.
  4. Heat Blisters

Last summer here in roasting-hot Austin, Texas, I thought I'd do my regular 8-mile walk barefoot. After 1/4 mile, my feet hurt too much from the hot sidewalks, so I put on sandals. A month later, much of my calluses pealed off because of that short walk.
  5. Stress Fracture - Mid Shaft/2nd Metatarsal

I don't know anything for sure, but in my case, while I was healing a metatarsal stress fracture, I think that I rested my foot too much and lost some range of motion in my toes. When starting back, it was easy to hurt my toes (pain in top of toes where they meet the metatarsals) because it...
  6. Is it time to see a doc, or keep waiting?

I have very similar symptoms, and a trip to the doctor, then the xray place, then an orthopedic surgeon informed me that yes, it's a 3rd metatarsal stress fracture, and it had mostly healed on its own despite lingering pain after 3 months. Frustrating having this pain, but I'm like you--I don't...

Thanks for the play-by-play. Very helpful for me since I've never run a race and don't know what it feels like. Well written!

  9. Wildlife Half Marathon 2011 By John "stjohnthegambler" Yohe

Wildlife Half Marathon 2011By John "stjohnthegambler" Yohe I like having races almost in my back yard: I get up at six o’clock and that feels like a luxury. After a ten minute mediation session and a somewhat leisurely breakfast (plain yoghurt with almonds, dried cherries, a spoonful of...
  10. Article: Wildlife Half Marathon 2011 By John "stjohnthegambler" Yohe

I'm just getting into barefoot running, and I've never run a race. This kind of narrative is very interesting to me. I like hearing what you're thinking about while running, how you relaxed into a faster pace and all the other details. Thanks for taking the time to write it up!
