Lee, I like you. We are similar in many ways. I was a scientist and researcher before becoming a coach so I know of the downsides of published studies. You are correct. It sounds like the researchers were not biased in any way. I agree, the study could have been done better but no study is...

Bare Lee, the study proves Chi Runners had less impact and more efficiency than every group. What else is there? I can send you the entire paper, it's 110 pages and I'm reading it now. Running truly barefoot may be less impactful than CR. But by far most Americans run in shows all the...

Agree, wish they used truly barefoot runners. They did use Altras and VFF's.

There was a barefoot/minimalist group. They were 'experienced' in barefoot running but most/all ran in minimalist shoes. The study lists what shoes they wore. I guess what thing the study and we Chi instructors try to get out is this. Chi Running has other benefits than what barefoot running...

Yes, I agree. But, the barefoot/minimalist shoe group was required to have trained over 50% off their time barefoot and minimalist shoes for at least 6 months. It was interesting to see that a fairly high percentage of barefoot/minimalist shoe runners heel striked. Also, one Chi Runner wore...

Has anyone seen the new UNC study? It shows Chi Running is more effective than POSE, barefoot running and running in traditional shoes for reducing impact and increasing effiency. If anyone is interested, I can send the entire study...

You're right. Most stuff out there is bullshit and hype. I've seen Chi Running work for so many people though. We may disagree on the reasons why, but it can really help.

There are quite a few differences in CR and Pose. In CR, we teach quite a bit about moving from the core and spinal/hip rotation where I don't believe Pose does as much. With CR, it isn't just about technique. We share a lot about the joyful, meditative and peaceful benefits of running. We...

A pretty good video by Danny Dreyer about what Chi Running really is and teaches. http://vimeo.com/user3646117/review/52713433/f8f8f09476

To be honest, I don't like talking about myself or bragging. I've posted some results on my website because my friends and family says it helps for my business. I'm proud of what I've done but there are way more impressive people out there. Most people are cooler and more talented then me at...

I'd love to share a video of me running. My students say it's one of the most helpful things for them, is watching me run. They say I'm graceful and make it look easy. Because it is! I'll post something in the next couple days. By the way, I wouldn't feel comfortable and confident teaching...

Most runners, especially men, don't rotate their pelvis enough or at all. Here's an exercise for you to try: Speed walk as fast as you can. The key is you have to WALK. Notice to do this your pelvis has to rotate (not sway). Then fall into a nice, easy run and for at least a few steps your...

Ok, don't force anything then. Try to allow the legs to open up behind you. Key words: 'allow' and 'behind' You can think of the spine rotating from T12/L1. This may help. Most important thing is that your legs are not opening up to the front and instead are opening up to the back.

Yes, I believe Lee is a smartass. At least it's MY reality ;) Pelvic rotation is different from leveling the pelvis. Pelvic rotation is allowing the spine and hips to rotate. Opening up your stride to the back and allowing the spine to rotate. It's hard to describe (and teach) but helps...

NickW, I totally agree! I think it's all the above. What are folks thoughts on pelvic and/or spinal rotation while running? In Chi Running, we teach this and for some (about 20% of my students) it is the thing that allows them to run faster, with less effort and less impact.

Is stronger feet the main reason why trail running reduces injuries? Or would it also be because the 'core' works more? Or my belief that impact is reduced because of higher cadence?

Here's a question for everyone. I'm curious of your opinions! Running on trails and 'soft' surfaces is said to reduce injuries and be better for us. Most people believe it is because the 'soft' surface absorbs impact therefore reducing injuries. I think this is bogus. I believe trails are...

Here is what I teach and do for trail running: If it's a technical trail, cadence and stride length are fixed automatially. Cadence is increased and stride length is decreased in general. My cadence for very rocky trails is sometimes as high as 200 steps/min. And this isn't running very fast...

Lots to comment on but I'll address the issue of pelvic thrusting. It's one of my favorite subjects. The movement we are looking for is not thrusting actually. You DON"T want to push your hips forward. It's more of a tilt. The best way to create this movement is with the floor laying...
