Hydration - How much is too much?

Yes, agree that we're all Yes, agree that we're all different. That's one of the reasons why drinking to thirst is what I advocate. When I started to take an interest in minimalist/barefoot running, I was quite surprised to find that the need for shoes was not the only place where myth or...

Hydration - How much is too much?

The guys over at The guys over at sportsscience http://www.sportsscientists.com/search/label/dehydration have done a few articles of hydration, and dispel many of the common myths about hydration. (for instance, the consumption of water does not affect your core body temperation in any...

Barefoot walking is almost harder than running

I've always found that I've always found that walking barefoot on the sidewalk or road, I just fall into a midfoot strike and it's comfortable. Any kind of shoe and I have to force it, and it feels quite un-natural to midfoot strike. No matter how minimal the shoe. Marc

    My first BF Trail run

I'm in Wellington. Gets a bit I'm in Wellington. Gets a bit of a bad rap, but I think it's ideal for running. It's never too hot or too cold, for running, and you can't go more than 10km in any direction without finding a trail. But there's good trails all over the country I guess.

    My first BF Trail run

Yesterday, I did my first BF trail run. After successfulkly navigating a 5km loop behind my house in VFF sprints, I figured I probably could handle it BF. I knew I could handle 5km BF on the roads and sidewalks...just wasn't sure about the hills and trails. Success. The arch on one foot looks a...

    Blisters and hydration questions

yikes....Yes It's a scary yikes.... Yes It's a scary thing. Especially, I think, for runners, because it's not very well understood. A runner being taken into medical tents during or after a race can easily be given fluids because the symptoms of hypoglycemia, hyponatremia, heat exhaustion, or...

    Blisters and hydration questions

Um...no, it Um...no, it doesn't. Hyponatremia occurs because excessive water consumption dilutes the sodium content of your cells. It has become a real risk to atheletes because of the incorrect statements that 'you cant drink too much water'. You can, and it can kill you. There are proven...

Bleah. Wrong turn into a horror movie

haha...chased back into your haha...chased back into your house by an oppossum. Excellant. I've seen possum fur slippers and gloves in the tourist shops here. It is wonderfully soft, and apparently when blended with wool, is every bit as good as the boutique wools. Marc

    Blisters and hydration questions

hmmm, well, I beg to differ hmmm, well, I beg to differ on the statement that "any excess will be excreted". That is most definitetly not the case. It's called hyponatremia, and it is FAR more dangerous than dehydration. Anyone really interested in the myths around hydration and exercise...

Just as our feet evolved to Just as our feet evolved to allow us to run, our thirst mechanism evolved to tell us when we need to drink. It might take a little while to re-learn listening to our thirst, but it's far easier that re-learning to run barefoot The whole 'you need to drink x litres...

Bleah. Wrong turn into a horror movie

Yesterday, while doing a trail run that I regularly do, I inexplicably took a wrong turn. The trail is marked with blue rectangles on the trees, occasionally joined by pink squares. I occasionally wondered what the pink sqares were about - now I know. I guess I wasn't paying attention, and...

When I walk barefoot, I fall When I walk barefoot, I fall into a midfoot strike - just. My heel lands a fraction of a second after the rest of my foot. This feels comfortable and easy.
