Outside Magazine Article About Barefoot Running

I just finished my first marathon a few weeks ago in my KSOs and while walking through the crowd at the end A dud said " wow you ran this whole race barefoot?" I said no and walked off while he looked at me really confused. I used to take the time to try and educate but now when people say...

    Blood blister!

I ran my first outdoor BF run of the year Thursday and had a great time except for the 1/8 mile of crushed gravel. No bruising or blisters though so running all winter in KSOs seems to have kept my form decent.

Anyone ever try to modify dress shoes?

I chopped the heal off a pair of Rockport wing tips and the only issue ended up being that the heal had voids in the rubber which ended up being exposed. Didn't cause a problem but did look odd. I eventually found a pair of driving loafers which only have about a 3 mm heal and are super...

    2012 Mileage Club

I've got 800 miles recorded and if I had to guess I'd say another 100 miles without the iPhone. For 2013 I want to get over 1200 total miles. The 50k was slower than I like and it all came down to my endurance.

Does Anyone Use an App to Log Running Miles, Paces, and General Exercise?

I use digifit on my iPhone and iPad. Normally the iPad comes out for treadmill runs and I use digifit to keep track heart rate.

    Are Ultrarunners Masochists or Hedonists?

I love the post especially Dori at the end. I can't tell what I am and but I have only done one baby ultra (50k). I had a great 21mile run yesterday. I didn't start wondering why until I got home and was relaxing on the couch. I'm pretty sure I run because I enjoy it at the time and because I...

A growing discomfort with traditional shoes

Try just taking the insoles out of the shoes. A lot of times the arch support is predominantly part of the insole and not the footbed of the shoe.

    Breathing

If I'm going long I try to start the first 3 or 4 miles just breathing through my nose. It gets me in a decent rhythm and sets a slower pace I'm more likely to be able to maintain for a few hours.

    I'm ruined ...

I guess I never fully transitioned to barefoot running. I did a half marathon Barefoot but due to 90 degree sunny days I was never able to ditch my shoes 100%. I have been in KSOs when needed with no real discomfort to speak of. I did transition from boat anchors to VFFs and the to barefoot...

Do you think I can run in these?

It's interesting to see them using the sidewall f the tire. I've made a couple pair with scrap tire and always used the tread portion.

    Apps for Running

I use digi fit on my iPhone and was able to record about 6 hours of my 50k last year. To bad I missed an hour :-(. It does use battery for gps but isn't that bad.

    Form Modifications & Scuffed Toes

Yeah, just concentrate on having your toes lifted slightly when you land. Truly relaxing your feet works too but it's really tough to think about not doing something for me. I I have a suspicion that a fair amount of TOFP is related to trying too hard to keep your toes up. I have no proof...

    Hydration systems

I like hat octane pack. The extra pockets at the waste look convenient.

    Hydration systems

I hadn't heard about freezing the bladder to prevent mold but it makes sense. I normally just open it up and let it thoroughly dry out for a couple of days.

    Hydration systems

I use a camelback lobo for my long runs. It's a 3 liter backpack more designed for biking but works well. With the chest and waist strap it doesn't bounce much and so long as you suck the air out of the bladder before you start it's quiet. I run in a very humid part of Virginia and sweat a lot...

    Zazzle Store Additions

And I just ordered a shirt for my upcoming half marathon. Nice tech shirt, very smooth and light fabric. They did a good job printing the logo and the custom text on the back.

    Run-walk-run: method or madness?

I ran (sort of) a 50k last year and a guy using a 4 minute run 1 minute walk method beat me by about an hour. I don't know if that is because of the method, because I was undertrained or a combination. I do know it was rather humbling.

    BF Accessories?

I'll be using my black road I'd during my next race. I wouldn't wear anything but thy are using the ankle tags instead of bib tags.
