Running in Kilts

Just had to post here, because I'm supper excited...been wanting to try this for a while, but just ordered my first kilt....this one:

I can't wait to run in it and achieve yet another degree of freedom :-D. Although, I am still probably at least 3 weeks out from running again yet....but that doesn't mean I can't sport it all over town in my normal barefoot life :).

Who else runs in kilts?

I think it might be so much easier on those long runs, when you aren't sweating all of your bodily fluids away :)

Don't you want that a little shorter? I've always pictured you in a kilt anyways; I mean you seem like one of those guys I see at races running with a kilt on. Perhaps it goes back to our lineage. Will you be wearing undies with it?

 I plan on wearing it up on

I plan on wearing it up on or above the navel, as is traditional, instead of current trends on the hips....this will make it the right length....I think, when I'm running in town, I will wear something under--just in case....but when I'm out in the woods, not planning on wearing anything ;-)...as for races....since I've not done one yet...I'll have to make that decision when I come to it!

Yeah, maybe herritage....the other side of my mother's family (not the Goodgame side we've been talking about) is Fleming....immigrating from the highlands to PA in the 17th century...from the clan Murray ;-D....my mom was a bit concerned that this tartan wasn't our "family plaid"...when I had to explain to her it wasn't even wool :-D. she's ok with it now, but I promised her if/when I buy a full 8yrd kilt kit, it will be of our family's plaid :-D.

As in Scottish? I have English in my ancestry, along with Black Foot and Sioux Indian, or so I've been told. That line is not as researched, understandably, as it would be difficult to find records for Indian lineage. So if you have Scottish and I have English bloodlines, then somewhere down the road, our ancestors decided to stop fighting and start making...babies.

EDITED TO ADD: You would have to read the other thread with ancestor lineage for this to make sense.

Mom:

English (anglo-saxon) horse thieves....married Scotts-irish jacobite refugees :)



Dad:

German married eastern Europe Jewish...both american citizens who met as marines during WWII....which I think is pretty cool



So maybe I should wear my family tartan, a broach of a Star of David...get a neo-nazi swastika tat on my naked foot, and carry a basket of chips (Brit style) while I watch episodes of Monty Python, picking out my teeth with a sighn dubh. :-D

NEVER get a swastika tattoo! The German/Jewish mix is quite interesting. If you have enough research on the side, you could probably write a very romantic novel about it.

the swastika was a joke....a bad one....but figured since the german 1/4 married the jewish 1/4 during wwII, I could get away with the joke ;-)....but, no, I would never wear something like that any where on my body, let alone get a tat of one ;-D.

I'm not above running in kilts. I'm probably not going to do it either. At least not for $79.50.

Maybe we should come up with some BRS colors. I'd love to wear a kilt for my first ultra. I think it'd be kinda awesome.

I'm very tempted to pull the trigger on one of those sports kilts myself but I'm still curious about the sizing. Where do you measure? Hips? Waist? Belly?

Plus I want to hear Nate's review.

 I probably would run

I probably would run naked...it did occur to me the weekend right before I hurt myself, while I was up on the mountain, that I could probably ditch my board shorts...but figured if I did, it would be the ONE time I saw one of my red-neck hunting neighbors scouting out good tree-stand places for the fall....they already think I'm a bit "touched" :). They are probably right.

You are supposed to kneel on the floor, and measure from natural waist (just above the navel) to the floor...making sure you are nice and straight. A kilt is supposed to be worn at the natural waist, not the hips, where most of us like to wear our shorts/pants...and come to just above to right at the middle of the knee cap....I'm curious to how it will feel too...not at the legs, I think that will feel fantastic....but at the gut....I'm not usually one for liking things around my mid section...but the nature of the kilt, might feel quite alright :-D....I'll let you all know!

but don't we already have a couple guys here wearing kilts? or is it just some of my bf running fb friends??

As for th 80 bucks...I figure, I'm never buying shoes again...and haven't bought new clothes in probably five years...it's probably ok to spend a little on this :-D....wait....I did buy a couple of t-shirts in 2008 when we were in Hawaii with my parents ;-).

the natural waist feel will take some getting used to. I don't even like tucking shirts in as I feel it's too restricting.

Shacky, just remember to lube

Shacky, just remember to lube those thighs if you are wearing one on an ultra. Seems like a chaffing incident waiting to happen. The only thing that prevents no-no chafe on a long run for me is compression shorts.

I like wearing a Sarong

I like wearing a Sarong around the house and especially when hanging out in Hawaii. I have never considered running in a Sarong as they have a tendency to fall off or untie and that might thrill the locals. Running in a Sarong should be a breeze ;)

I'm thinking the high-waist thing might not be an issue, because of HOW high it is...but if it is uncomfortable, I'll get a short one and wear it on my hips :)....

I was wondering about the chaffing....but thinking, if you are not wearing anything under to soak up sweat, it would be pretty well lubricated??? But on the other hand...it might be quite uncomfortable swinging free for an ultra....so compression shorts are probably a good sport-kilt accessory :-D

I don't think I'd run in a traditional kilt...at least not in summer :-D....that wool makes me hot just thinking about it....but I am thinking about the possibility of wearing a great kilt (belted kilt) around town in the winter :)
