Hydration systems

Okay, I am trying to find out what you guys use for hydration systems. Normally I just carry a water bottle with me, but I have found that running in excess of 12 miles means carrying more water with me and that isn't happening in a water bottle. So what do you recommend. I know that I'm going to need something like a camelback, but I want something that fits snuggly, doesn't irritate and rub, and breathes/dries quickly. Any suggestions? Carrying a quart of water with me, just isn't cutting it. My last 12 mile run I decided to weigh myself before and after the run. I lost 6 pounds. The bad part is that I put a quart of water back in during the run. So that was about 8 pounds lost on a 12 mile run. That's almost a gallon of water!

Does it fit snuggly? I am just worried about it bouncing around and chaffing.

I use a camelback lobo for my long runs. It's a 3 liter backpack more designed for biking but works well. With the chest and waist strap it doesn't bounce much and so long as you suck the air out of the bladder before you start it's quiet. I run in a very humid part of Virginia and sweat a lot but I normally only loose a pound or two on a long run.

Shorter runs or runs that have water fountains I use a 20 oz handheld. I like the minor upper body workout I get from lugging the bottle along.

Not much bounce at all, i've never had any chaffing with it.
Here's a review, and remember if you buy one to store the bladder in a zip lock bag and place it in the freezer to prevent mold.
To stop the water from slopping about just hold the bladder upside down and suck out any excess air.

Ooh, i like the look of the Octane...Hadn't seen that one before. I like to carry 'something' with me on trail runs, even short ones, just in case. As i'm training for a trail half-marathon, to be followed by a lunatic push towards a 2013 50k, a pack makes more sense than my handheld.

I have camelback octane LR, but I don't use bladder with it.. I drink so scarcely (and not at all during first hour) that separate hose seems bit unnecessary. Pocket for LR's hydration bladder is easily reachable while running (atleast, for me), so I keep flat shaped water bottle there, doesn't bother at all..

Well I just ordered the Nathan HPL #020... My Nathan 2R belt was just not enough with 16oz for double digit miles now, especialy when its near triple digit temps! I was stashing a water bottle on the route for refills but that takes extra time and fuss. Think I'll like the vest better than a waist belt anyhow and it should have room for some other stuff too.

I've tried two camel back packs, two belts and a Nathan's HPL 020. The nathan's backpack blows the rest away.
Here are the main points I like:
  • It has 3 adjustment points to really customize the fit.
  • Zero bounce once it is adjusted
  • Bladder is easy to turn inside out for cleaning/drying since it is like a big ziplock bag
  • Very light weight
  • Lots of storage.
    • One zippered pocket on the front left
    • One stretch top pocket on the front left (on top of the zippered one)
    • One pocket on the right with a bungee cord pull close top. It is big enough to fit my Galaxy phone in securely
    • It comes with a 2L bladder but I think the bladder area could hold a 3l
    • Large pocket on top of the bladder pocket in the back
  • Very comfy and breathable I can wear it with out a shirt and not chafe or be annoyed
  • Dries fast from rain/sweat.
The thing is so handy I wear it on shorter runs were a hand held bottle would do just fine. I put less water in don't really notice it being there. If you take all the air out of the bladder and sinch the back adjustments down there is little to no sloshing.

So, I freeze my C'bak bladder, but I don't put it in a ziplock bag - what purpose does that serve?

Always half-assin' things, aren't ya?

I don't know of any reason to use the ziplock. most modern bladder systems are the 'don't hold on to odors or flavors' science wonder that is plastics..

Well, my motto is "Why do things right, if you can avoid doing them altogether", so the fact that I'm even half-assing it is a small miracle in and of itself....

HAHA...thanks for the advice, you guys. I will have to let you know if I end up getting one. I am pretty sure I will as I just seem to sweat like crazy here.
