Paleo - 2nd thoughts

Lee, red meat is an excellent source of nutrients and fats it's just that we need to get organic grass fed beef to avoid the chemicals and excess omega-6s due to the animals being grain fed
I agree. Just a matter of how much is good for us. I have no idea really, so I stick to once or twice a week. The other dinners are chicken, fish, and seafood, which are also nutritious, albeit with their own problems of human interventions/practices. During the day it's all nuts, fruits, and veggies, and a little yoghurt.

OK, thanks. I haven't really explored the Paleo internet stuff too much. Mostly making it up on my own, based on my paltry paleoanthro knowledge. Bon Appétit!
I do too based on my limited knowledge of gatherer-hunter tribes of, um, not sure what is the pc term now a days... I'll say Native Americans or whatever is the correct term... :D

I have to be careful when I talk about Indians as I live with one. I always specify "turban, not teepee", but that's probably non-PC as well

Where I grew up in Montana is right in Salish-Kootenai tribe country and we grew up saying Indian, but then it changed to Native Americans in my late teens, and now I hear that's not PC anymore either and there's another term although I have no idea what it is... So confusing to not be offensive anymore...

yeah, and neither of us is old enough that we can get away with saying what the heck we like and offending everyone

haha!

i believe the PC term is now "indigenous". who the hell cares though? you can do anything and everything to not piss people off and someone will still be offended. people need to stop being so damn weak as to let others affect their mood so easily.

what was this post about again?

oh yeah, i've heard people say "dot or feather" for indian.

Yeah, Mark Sisson, www.marksdailyapple.com
The guy looks great so maybe Paleo is good. I don't know. I was reading his stuff and just couldn't get past that he sell supplements, yet espouses eating like cave men supposedly did.
Thanks. I'll look into it later. The home page does come off a bit like a snake oil salesman, but often times with these guys, like the Sock Doc, there's always some truth to what they say, it's just that it presupposes a knowledge to be able to differentiate the good stuff from the b.s., and if you already have that knowledge, then you don't really need them. But we'll see.

As someone who was formerly in the 230's and yo-yoed a few times before settling in the 160's, I feel your pain. Can't really comment on the whole Paleo diet, or the bunged up feeling.

I will say that I've tried a lot of things, including low carb, and I get tired and have headaches when going into ketosis. Though, it has been effective for me in losing and keeping the weight off. Since, I'm at my goal weight and carb cycling to gain muscle, I use simple carbs judiciously. I do eat lots of leafy vegetables, and generally don't worry about them when thinking of carbs.

While losing weight, I found that a low calorie diet and cardiovascular exercise was helpful together, whereas either alone didn't do much for me. Personally, I just didn't have the energy while on the low cal diet to do strength training, so I didn't. However, I'm trying to make up for it now.

Good luck!

How's this for paleo-veggie?

Stir fried veggies with quorn and ginger, only wheat in sight is in the soy sauce

I have been thinking a lot about Paleo/Veggie diets lately. I think both camps are right. I think we used to eat veggie in the warm months and then transition to more meat as it cooled and veggies were less abundant. It would make sense to me if we adjusted our diets based on availability.

That being said I have lost a little over 7 pounds going vegan and cutting processed sugars. It was an unintended side effect. :)

Glad to hear it Mark, I need to make a greater effort with the sugars I think.

This has been an awesome slow burn thread, so thanks all for that...

Being avid small-holders, I don't think I could ever go totally veggie, but I have been cutting meat down to weekends only. I think that's going to work for me, along with just keeping an eye on my cals with 'myfitnesspal'...

Interestingly, I've just got back from a week in sardinia...lots of italian and catalan food...pretty much zero chance of eating veggie AND no highly processed carbs...so... I used some of what I learned chron the paleo stuff, and had quite a lot of meat, fish, cheese, and veg.
