Just Re-Starting

Am I going to be able to run over the loose gravel? God that stuff hurt.
While I haven't yet graduated to loose gravel, I know some have. I can do chipseal and mild gravelly trails now, and common debris and even broken glass from cars, although not bottles, doesn't bother me in the least. The worst is the odd, stray, sharp rock on top of smooth asphalt or cement that pops up when you least expect it. As in almost everything else, the ability of our bodies to adapt is amazing, given time.

Yeah....you should run purely on loose grave....that should really speed up your recovery...lol :D

Kidding aside, there is some truth to that. It might be a faster way to improve your form. It's very difficult to run incorrectly on gravel. I was unable to run due to injury early in the spring, so I took up long'ish walks on sharp gravel.....eventually graduating to very slow running on it. You WILL learn to bend your knees and relax.

About three weeks agoI got caught out on the golf course in a torrential down pour. I was already in the clubhouse having dropped my clubs off in my truck. So after my 19th hole beverage I had to brave the elements, my truck was parked way across a gravel parking lot. So I had to hightail to get to my truck. So now I am sitting in my truck after my dash and the thought hit me that when I parked, it took some careful walking to get into the club house (lots of loose pointy stuff) and I had just raced across this parking lot barefoot and not felt a thing. It kind of left me bewildered as to how that was. Still a little confused, I do not know if it was the beer or my form. o_O

A couple of things in play here I think. I've definitely noticed a little beer relaxes me. :) The other thing is, when some of you talk about "just run", I think that's what you did when you scooted across the parking lot. No thought on running, just on getting in your vehicle asap. Maybe beer and thunderstorms are key tools in good running form. That would make a great race title......the first annual "Get Drunk and run in a Thunderstorm 10K". Scheduling that bad boy would be tough though.

Or just call it "Beer and Thunder 10K"
Race date could be TBD within a 30 day window......entry would have to be cheap though, lol

course that could be a cool event to do with motorcycles....thunder being the sound of the cruisers...

You are right though, no thought about running at all, it was get there as quick as I can. The beer could have counted for prerun carbs though.

I like that better. Certainly more succinct. Or "Brews and Bolts 10K".....with "bolt" having the double meaing.
then if it didn't storm you could get a hardware store to sponsor the run....lol

The demise of my bfr career came from exactly this.

It seems like all of these threads are leading toward beer. Which is fine by me, I just need an alert that informs me. Or, I just look at the post count of a thread. If it is 10 one day and 90 the next, I can assume the thread has turned into a beer or cadence thread.

OK. Gravel. I run on it all the time. Although, my pace is very, very slow. It just takes a long time and proper technique to be able to tolerate it. Good foot conditioning helps. I would say half of it is mental. One trick is to try it when you can't see it. Early morning or night. Or, during the day, close your eyes for a few minutes. Except when I close my eyes, I tend to drift a little. Watch out for the power poles. Now, just use common sense and don't get hurt.

I do like beer, but the info on gravel is nice too.

My feet were a little sore after my first day back, but it was not from blistering or tears or cuts, just soreness I assume from the gravel that stopped me at the end. I am going again today, not sure if I will make 2 miles again, but I am going to try and take the gravel part first and see what effect that has.

i've come across some gravel i can barely walk on. i'm too slow plus my training keeps me from going faster. should be fun if i can do a race on monday with everyone bf. i "run" it all the time with walking thrown in over the big patches of gravel.

So are you doing the trail trial after all? Thought you were bowing out due to low funds?
