Seriously. It seems that everything we eat these days is dangerous. I just finished watching Dr. Oz's segment about cancers, and he basically said don't eat:

Ham
Processed meats
Deli meats
Red meats
Colas
Coffee
Mints
Chocolate
Processed foods
Breads
and on and on and on...

So what can I eat that won't cause cancer and kill me?

TJ, this is why I don't watch the news or watch tv shows like that. EVERYONE DIES. EVERYTHING YOU EAT CAN BE HARMFUL. WATER CAN EVEN KILL YOU IF YOU DRINK TOO MUCH. Ok, I got that out of my system. It seems that depending on the study some foods are good or bad. I say do everything in moderation because the powers that be DON'T REALLY KNOW ANYTHING. They change what they thought was healthy or unhealthy way to frequently for me to trust their opinions anymore. Eat what makes your body feel good, and I don't mean junk food (that makes your mind feel good). If a certain food makes you feel like crap, don't eat it. If it makes you feel good and energized, then it's probably good for you.

Bacon...lots of bacon...oh avocados too. Did I mention bacon?

OK serious answer...most of those don't cause cancer...red meat can only if over cooked...otherwise non processes red meat is one of the most nutritious things to eat.

Also...

...bacon

Thanks all. I just can't see eating 80% fruits and veggies, which I already do eat a ton of those anyway. I love bananas, strawberries, watermelon, apples, cantaloupe, tomatoes, onions, avocados, yellow squash, salad stuff, broccoli, etc., etc. The thing is, most of this food is seasonal in my area, so we get limited in what we have or we choose frozen.

Dr. Oz's show always has a lot of conflicting info. It can get confusing sometimes, the main reason I don't watch him much anymore. I only watched this segment because it was about different types of cancers and what causes them and what foods to avoid to prevent them and slow the cancer process down.

Well, I just answered this elsewhere, so I copied it here. Hope you don't mind:

It was taken a year ago by an Atlanta Journal Constitution photographer for an article about barefoot runners running in the Peachtree Road Race, July 4 (which happens to have the largest 10K field in the world with like 55,000 runners). It was my 3rd year running it barefoot. I was totally bummed about not being able to run it four years in a row this year. The picture reminds me of where I wish I could be and (although I can't run) helps me to feel like I belong here, with you all. Besides, I was tired of the other one. Ssssh. Don't tell Zola.

Oz knows Jack, but he prefers to sell out for a buck instead of being truthful.
One thing I've learned from 38 years as a health care practitioner and 8 straight months as a patient is that the most experienced docs readily admit that they just don't know.
Micro managing foods for health sounds great on the "news" programs, but is scientificaly baseless and will probably remain so.
80% fruits and veggies? Uh......pretty diabetic precursing sounding to me! But then again, NOBODY knows!

You can eat whatever you want, TJ. Just tell 'em I said it's OK. I figure,if it's all going to kill me (and trust me, there's a study out there telling us each and everydamnthing will), I'ma go happy and eating what I want.

That said, I try to stick to whole foods with less processed stuff (not perfect with this, it can be easier said than done). Except for ice cream. And beer. Those are staples of the Lomad diet!

If you move a lot outdoors, what you eat seems to be not very important (if you don't have intolerancies), just eat some plants and get some carbs and protein also. I would say plants are more important than those latter two.. And eat with sensible timing, don't skip breakfast..

Dr. Oz is charismatic, and he mixes in a lot of sound advice with the unsupported stuff, so it's hard to pick apart what's useful.

In any case, just try to eat less junk and more whole foods, the rest is probably fine tuning.
Micheal Pollan's books are all fun reads and (measured) eating advice; as I recall, he points out that humans as omnivores have had great success eating a wide variety of foods, with the exception of the modern processed food 'american' diet.
Good book: Marion Nestle "what to eat" though she never tells you what to eat, it's an interesting tour through nutrition science, modern food marketing and production, and how to make reasonable choices.

+1, only I include ice cream, beer, and wine as appropriate exceptions.

and coffee----it's good for you, i'm pretty sure.

I say let common sense prevail. Avoid processed foods, eat a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and whatever protein floats your boat. If it comes in a box, don't eat it. In the supermarket, stay on the outside, and avoid the isles. All the best food is on the perimeter of the store. Oh yea, Eat to Live, don't live to eat. Everything in moderation, including moderation. A little excess once in a while is good for the soul. For what it's worth.

dr oz's income depends on advertisers so he will say whatever he is told like a good little puppet.

eat more of what god made and less of what man made and you'll be fine. worrying about it will just make anything worse.
