Took me 4 1/2 months to lose another 10 lbs.

Wow, didn't seem like it's been that long. Back on 29 March I posted the pic of my scale showing 199 lbs., the first time I had been under 200 in nearly a decade probably. Now I'm under 190! Going to try to get under 180 I think. :D

I was around 215 when I started this whole barefoot journey last spring/summer.

My wife and I are headed to the beach this weekend, so hopefully we can take some pics similar to the pics on the beach from last year, and I'll post some comparo shots.

I'm incredibly jealous Patrick, congrats. It's been a slow process for me. I started at 210lbs 18 months ago and am 195 now. Still have about 20-25 pounds I want to lose.

Nice job!!! Getting the weight off is very tough.....Keeping it off is incredibly tough!
Congrats!!!:barefoot:

Yeah no real time goal here. But going barefoot is 100% of the reason I have stuck with it (running, just generally being more active than before). And then the running is what led me back into cycling.

Nice. Congrats.

Congrats Patrick!

I'm not someone who has struggled with weight issues but here's an optimistic thought for both you and Nick. If it takes someone 15 months to lose 15 lbs (rather than, say, losing it all quickly in 3 months as they had hoped) then they've arrived at the same endpoint of being 15 pounds lighter, but they've had an extra year to learn the habits of healthy lifestyle maintenance. They're that much farther ahead because the trick of sustaining those improvements has already been internalized, integrated into the gradual weight-loss strategy.

That's fantastic, wonderful news, Patrick! But, please be careful with this stuff, ok? Losing too much at once almost guarantees that all the pounds will come back, and bring a few friends with them. I know how hard it is to curb the euphoria when you see the numbers dropping like that, but it's a kind of trap that's easy to fall into.

Regardless of that, WTG! :D

Well this last 10 lbs was about an average of 1/2 lb. lost per week, which I think is extremely reasonable. It's taken me almost a year to lose 25, again about 1/2 lb. per week.

That's great. Just keep at it! Back in January I started dieting...started at 215 as well. Been doing paleo and have lost a lot of fat so far but now my weight loss is slowing down. I haven't been exercising enough to be able to break 18% body fat...

Me too. Lost 30 pounds in a year, just through exercise. No dietary hardship. The rate slows down, but if I can lose another 15-20 this coming year, then I'll arrive at my goal. It'll be nice to see the other side of 200 hundred again, hopefully by New Year's. Unfortunately, the extra fat did a good job at smoothing out the emerging wrinkles . . .

Just work diet into...its really difficult to lose weight by exercise only...diet is how you lose weight
Depends on how you put it on. If you've gained weight through inactivity, then reintroducing the same level of activity should be enough to get you back to your prior weight, in half the time or less that it took you to put it on. If you've gained weight via poor eating habits, then yes, diet will be the way to go. For most people, it'll probably be a combination of the two. In my case, it was lack of activity over a period of several years. My eating habits have remained the same throughout.

Diet rarely ever works for me by itself. Exercise on the other hand does work by itself for me. Now I use a combination of diet and exercise, it's probably healthier for me this way.

I agree with Josh, what I've done is a combination of exercise and change of diet, not in the sense of "I'm on a diet", but rather just going non-fat across
the board where possible, and MOST important: smaller portions. Eat more often but less. That strategy has really helped. I'm by no means fanatical
about it, my wife and I like burgers and fries, or pizza too much, but we keep those to maybe an occasional cheat, and not an every day.

Its all really simple: burn more than you eat :) Of course, figuring that all out is the hard part...

Should also say that the biggest chunk of weight came off a year back not due to running
but long distance cycling. Nothing like getting on a bike for 3 or 4 hours at a time to whack
off the calories... what's great about it is its so much fun doing it you don't notice the work :D

Yah, if you got the time, you can stay aerobic on a bike for a very long time and cover a lot more ground to boot. I like running because it's more intense over a shorter period of time, great for a busy schedule.

For me, I tried diet only, and weight plateaued after a few days.
Exercise only for a month, and weight was the same. Although I think I lost bodyfat (waist size dropped an inch).
Diet and exercise is what worked for me, but that's me. Everyone has to learn about their own body.
