People's reactions when you run

well played :)

During my earlier days of transitioning, when I'd wanted to run further but the skin of my feet couldn't handle all the terrain, I carried my shoes to put on after running (x) minutes. A few people passing me in cars would yell:

HEY! YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!

(in a very anguished tone) YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO USE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU RUN!

---

One of my first comments I had gotten while BFRing through an apartment complex (I was in college at the time):

2 girls: {chatter, chatter} ... ... ... Run Forrest, RUN!

I thanked them...though I realized afterwards...Forrest runs shod...

hell, if people were laughing while i was bf i would have asked what's so funny.

i love to mess with people. my replies are usually better than anything they can come up with. growing up with a NY'r dad from Puerto Rico who wasn't/isn't embarrassed of anything i don't get embarrassed too much anymore myself. my children on the other hand

i ran one race with my bikilas strapped to my wrists and people told me at the end that i should have worn them on my feet. i was like "what? why didn't you tell me that before the race?". they laughed.

Funny, on the last few runs I've been getting some of the more cliched reactions for the first time, like "where are your shoes dude?" from a young tattooed hipster chick. But on my last run I also got a sort of baptismal recognition from a lady chatting with another in front of her house: "OH look, a barefoot runner." I get the sense that a lot of people have heard of the trend by now, so it's an honor to be one of their first sightings.

Was running near my office last Friday, passed a house where a couple had just pulled up and the woman went out to get the mail. She said in one of those joking incredulous voices "What're you doing running around barefoot??", kinda smiling. I just yelled out in between huffs and puffs "It's better this way!" :)

This morning I ended up walking the last few yards to the car with a dog walker I normally just say hi to in passing. He said he'd not seen me for a while, but he'd seen my footprints quite a lot and told me that in his house I'm known as The Contessa - I'm liking having a title :)
(Oh, re-reading that I think I should clarify that enough cheery hellos have been exchanged for this to have been a nice, friendly conversation, not a creepy one!)

Speaking of birds, this dude had a pet bird ride around on his head during our whole group ride last Saturday night. Yes it was real, not fake.

Running up a busy canyon road, I see a car pull into a turnout up ahead. A lady at least 7 months pregnant gets out of the passenger side, dodges traffic to traverse the road. As I approach she says "Are you doing that on purpose or do you need help?" After a couple minute chat about why I am running barefoot, I thank her for her concern and wish her safety crossing back over the highway. I continue my run and give the husband, who was slightly slouched down in the driver's seat embarrassed, a friendly wave.

Like I said, I get more comments on the golf courses here in Winnpeg than I do on the road. Last night my son went golfing, when he checked in the guy behind the counter looked at the last name and asked if he was related to me. My son replied that he was and than the checkin guy asked him if he was aware that I golfed barefoot. I gues he figured on informing him of my lack of common sense or oncoming senility. My son chuckled and said that I do just about everything barefoot including running and driving his mom nuts by going into stores sans footwear. Than my son called me 1 hour later and congradulated me on starting a new trend, he had looked over to the first teebox and noticed that out of the foursome that were just heading out that 3 were barefoot. :D

It's funny Dutchie; I heard about barefoot golfing long before barefoot running. Like the mainstream view of bfr, it was mentioned as a driving range/practice and drill tool to improve balance. But, I remember a guy on some golf competition show who played exclusively barefoot (would have been 2006-ish when I saw that). I really enjoy walking 18 holes barefoot (and it really helps my putting game to feel the slope of the greens!).

Yah, I've been walking barefoot for a helluva lot longer than I've run barefoot, but yesterday was the first time I got a reaction while walking. A neighbor who's daughter has recently befriended ours was out with their family on bikes while I was taking our son on a stroll. She cried out, "Hey there barefoot walker!"

I can get a better feel for the speed of the greens as well by being barefoot. The only time my feet slip is if I try to kill a driver of the tee. But you are right, my putting has improved by golfing barefoot.:)
