I just bought a fancy new smart phone and I have no idea what to do with it.

Can anyone recommend any apps for running? Either training programs or just mapping and timing. Anything you can think of.

thanks
Brian

I used mapmyrun and found it very accurate, for iPhone, the problem came when it drained my phone battery which caused me to get in trouble with the wifey, who then promptly banned me from that ap.

Nick, I haven't had that issue with Runmeter, i've been able to run up to 2 straight hours with a full charge and still have some juice left at the end. On those occasions, just to be sure, I turned off WiFi and 3G and only listened to music saved in my phone, since those antennas consume a bit of energy too, but could still have all the GPS info stored correctly and without losing phone service.

On my Android I use SportsTracker Pro.
I've tried RunKeeper, Cardiotrainer, Endomondo... but I like customizable audio-feedback and a good combo with my Polar bluetooth HRM, so I eventually decided for SportsTracker (there are other apps with about the same name, but I use the one from sportstracklive.com.
Most of those apps are free or have a free version, or the cost only a few Dollars/Euros, so I would suggest to try out a few, and decides which one suits you best.

I have an app called "Stalker" It doesn't track your time or distance; all it does is yell "He's right behind you and he has a knife!"

Actually, I use MapMy[Run/Walk/Ride/Hike] which seems to work fairly OK. Keep an eye on battery usage, tho - whenever you're running the GPS you burn through a lot of power. There's someone on the board who got in to hot water over not being able to call and let his wife know that he was going to be out longer than planned (he was out running with his child in a stroller, so naturally, she was rather concerned).

Hey RunningPirate! Its funny you mention that type of app. I heard about https://www.zombiesrungame.com/ where you basically run from zombies chasing you on your gps. I havent done it yet, but it looks pretty fun. Now that its getting closer to Halloween, it might be a perfect time to run from some zombies!! (I have no idea whether it tracks your path, your calories, or anything else. Sometimes its just for fun)

The best app I've found is your feet, you always get a good connection to your legs and the batteries last for ages on a single charge of pizza ;) Seriously though keep it simple, many of these apps are not coded by runners and have little science behind them. Go for the apps that only feed you raw data like distance, pace, time etc. and work from there.
