Hi, I'm running in Invisible Shoe 6mm Contacts, and have started to experience a bit of pain and some minor swelling on the top of my right foot, between the big toe and the next. Nothing serious enough to make me limp, but definitely noticeable, and I don't want it to get worse. Don't think it's caused by the lace between the toes, as it hits a different area, and I've have no problem there. I'm only doing about 15 mi. weeks now, and have been in minimalist shoes for a few months. I occasionally do from 1-3 miles barefoot, too. Any ideas as to what might be causing this? I'm only worried about a stress fracture, but it seems like soft tissue pain. Thanks!

Does the toe lace cause your toes to spread more than what you are use to?

I ignored a small bump for 2 months on my fourth met, and while it didn't hurt so much - it got worse. It was a stress fracture. I'm not saying that is what you have, but, I'd be cautious if it is not resolved after a few rest days.

No, the lace doesn't affect my toes. It's actually feeling a bit better after a day of rest. Probably just too much too soon. Thanks for the feedback!

Python,any pain and swelling

Python,

any pain and swelling on the top of the foot makes me concerned for a bone reaction. The term “stress fracture” is better defined as a spectrum from mild bone reactions to outright cracks in the bone that you can see on a plain film. If it hurts to add a little torsion stress to the metatarsal (try to bend the bone a bit) be concerned and back way off. Too many folks have been misled into thinking the pain is soft tissue when it is not. Another simple test is a short hop. Does it hurt to land? Tough to tell more over email.

Thanks, Dr. Mark,   No pain

Thanks, Dr. Mark, No pain on adding torsion, or on hopping. I really feel it when I push on the soft tissue between the first & second toes, about an inch back from the juncture. Hoping for soft tissue. Have a small bit of swelling in that area.
