I can't believe I'm asking this, but hey, I'm amongst friends, right? No matter when I run (morning with nothing in my tummy or in the afternoon about 3 hours after eating) I find that I almost immediately have to go to the bathroom, not to pee. I can generally make it my 2 miles back to my house but at that point I literally race into the bathroom (fastest part of my run!) without taking my headphones out or anything. Sometimes I have to stop at the portapotties at my halfway mark. How am I ever going to increase my distance/time??? Please tell me there is some magic cure for this.

Ah, the runner's runs. They suck! I had this problem when I started increasing my mileage, but then it all sorted out, and I didn't have the problem anymore. Although you have this problem when you are running on an empty stomach, there's still stuff in your bowels that wants to get out. You have to figure out what it is you are eating that is causing this. Some foods, even more so when running due to the bounce, cause you to need to poop when least expected.

I fully expect you will be able to work through this and increase your miles. In the meantime, choose routes that have bathrooms (or well-covered woods) along the course, and bring something to wipe with...just in case you have to choose nature over commode. I used my socks once!

And until you get this figured out, stay away from chia seeds!

Yea, chia seeds are like the barefoot runner's go-to fuel source. Blame Born to Run.

Haven't had this issue (ahem...) recently as my milage is so low; I used to get it at the start (within 1st 5k) of long runs for my aborted marathon training. Perversely now looking forward to this becoming a problem again ;)

this can be a sign that you're running too fast for your condition ie anaerobic ... just food for thought, might not apply in your case. But it does apply in a lot of cases.

as far as increasing distance/time - just do your bizness and then pull up your shorts and head back out. I don't see the problem there. It doesn't matter if you accumulate miles trotting to the john. Miles is miles ...

I had never heard of the runners runs before until I joined this site. I myself have never had them yet, knock on wood, but I am also very regular and almost always go just before my runs. Hope it sorts itself out for you.

For the most part I try to do my business before I set out, for that very reason (can't make yourself go? Then try this combo: Strong coffee and Kashi Go-Lean. You'll go. Trust me. Oiy.)

Do you run with a CamelBak? If so, you might want to tuck in some toilet paper and Handi Wipes, lest you need to pull off of the trail (I have this for my C'Bak that I use for hiking). Not the most pleasant thought, it's true, but it's a lot more pleasant than the alternative.

OMG Jason that video was hysterical! And frightening! So far since I'm so new I'm just doing runs in my neighborhood, but the park at my halfway point has a couple portopotties. Once I start lengthening runs I'll have to scope out private places in advance, LOL. Thank you all so much for this most educational discussion!

Oh dear! Nothing more unpleasant in a happy run than that! The only time I have that issue is if I run first thing in the morning, before morning business is done. I assume the body starts timing itself out after a while? Good luck, anyhoo! :)

I spent some time dabbling in stage magic. The study of viewing angles comes in handy when dropping a deuce in the 'burbs. You'd be shocked at how little cover is required. Just remember to bury.

If you don't have TP and will be using local flora, familiarize yourself with the poisonous plants. ;)

poop. i love to poop. why are we so afraid to talk about it yet talk endlessly about food which ALL comes out as poop?

i've gotten the need to go during a run a couple of times but never have. i'm usually able to go before or i run. you may want to take a closer look at your diet and/or get up earlier. you can try just sitting for a few minutes when you wake up. your body should get accustomed to it and you'll be dropping dukies without straining in no time.

I've personally had the opposite affect with Chia seeds. They seem to slow things down for me. Imodium kept me going in my marathon, which was my longest run to date. I've also heard from a few sources to get up early and give yourself plenty of time to go before a longer run or a race. Let us know when you find the magic bullet that works for you....er...stops you from "working" in the middle of a run! ;)

I agree with Jonny and Chia seeds and immodium during my official runs. No pun intended. :) I try to plan my longer training runs so there are oppertunities to do my business when the urge hits. For me it is about 25% of the time and usually around the 2 mile mark as well.

Proper pre-flight helps avoid such issues. Get up a bit earlier and move around a bit. This will get your body moving internally. Take a dump. Run.

Don't let this happen to you. I hope he, at least, won the race... Somehow, I doubt it...
