Hi everyone, I am a relatively new runner (did couch25k last fall), and
have been trying a slow transition to barefoot while also doing a 26wk
training for the Portland Marathon... well, about 2 weeks ago while trying
to do a 5K at a 180 cadence (fast for me) I managed to strain my right
achilles :( I do not understand the injury fully, but I've definitely been
unable to run, have been satisfying myself walking the dog barefoot :p
Oh, the injury run was not barefoot, I was in some VFF Seeya's btw, so
far the longest I've run really barefoot has been 1.5 miles.

I'm 57 and I think the marathon goal this year may have been too
aggressive anyway, I have a fallback plan of a 10K and maybe a HM
instead... I've decided since the initial plan has been foobar'd I might
as well just take it easy and increase the distance barefoot. Right now
I'm just REALLY missing the running... sigh.

In any case, happy to find this site.

If you can carry a couch 25K, you should be able to build up to a marathon. But I think on a serious note that you are absolutely correct in your diagnosis of a marathon this year being wildly unrealistic with all of the intervening factors you've listed. You've gotten on the right plan with your "build easily and slowly" idea. Welcome to the crew, by the way. Glad to have you with us.

Welcome Jaybird! Sounds like you really tried to bite off a little more than you can chew. Glad to hear you've decided to back off and slow down. That may have been too fast of a transition for you. I know for me that would be super fast. I've been running barefoot a little over a year and I just hit 11 miles this week for a long run. Hope when your healthy you'll be able to join us OR BRS'ers for one of our group runs. Sometimes Mike and I will get together and run over in Beaverton and you would be more than welcome to join.

Welcome Jaybird! We just had a nice run this morning with our crew on Wildwood Trail. Hope to see you soon!
Josh

Welcome, Jay! Sounds like a good, conservative plan to get your racing distance up; start small, end big.

Did you select to join the Oregon Chapter through the Chapters link above? If not, please do.

welcome jay. good choice in giving up the mary. i've been running over two years now and still don't even have a half planned. learning to run light and easy are my goals, racing is just a little extra fun in my book.

join the OR chapter and find us on facebook. we do run together quite a bit.

Does your dog run with you??? What kind of dog is it? Mike's little lap dog runs with him/us all the time -he is bad-ass (oops who said that???). Yeah, I'm with Mike. I run for the enjoyment and I race for extra fun. I have never had a schedule or plan for getting faster, or running farther. But if you run because you love running, those two things will happen eventually anyway -in their own time, at a natural pace- the way it should be.

Josh, was there an invite for todays run? I guess not that I could have taken the stroller out on WW. Any other runs coming up?

The reason you aren't seeing the invites, is cuz I've been putting them on Facebook... That is why I have started letting you know on your page on here. :)

Please be sure to put all invites on this site as well, first and foremost. FB is a secondary resource. We want to grow the BRS by adding content to the BRS, not FB. See notes to your other thread Chapter Postings for more info.

Ha, no she doesn't run with me, she's a Peke and gets all wheezy after about a half mile :D
Actually though, i did try trotting with her bit a couple days back, maybe I should make her
work a bit more. She's always been more my wife's dog but she puts up with me if it means
a walk

I managed to run 2 miles yesterday so its coming back slowly.

Hi Jaybird - hope you're doing better out there! I think it's amazing that you are fairly new to running and were loving it so much that you set your sights on a marathon. I think we all learn a lot of lessons in our training and over the long term it can only help us in the end:) A good slow start sounds a lot better. I'm taking my own baby steps right now too...I've been running for a long time, the last year I've started running BF or in my VFF but now trying to transition to running more barefoot and I have to work at it to get my form better, and have had to slow down or not run as many miles...but in the end I know I'll be happy with my baby steps:) Good luck and feel better!

welcome SamanthaE. are you in oregon? if so join the chapter. we'll have to get together for an easy run on the waterfront at the very least soon as an intro for the newbies here.

Please feel free to join any of the Florida Chapters that are closest to you, Sam. At least that way, you will be kept up-to-date of what's going on with them.
