Vegetarians??

Just curious if there are any other Vegetarians on here. I have been a Vegetarian for almost a year now and love it. I am not a Vegan and don't think I could ever be since I eat eggs and cheese a lot. Some of my meals are a bit high in calories so I have to eat even smaller portions since I am trying to lose more weight.

Although not a herbivore, I have just discovered Quorn 'mince'. I stopped cooking with beef a while back because a) good stuff is expensive, b) it doesn't keep for long and c) it's still quite fatty. Quorn is waaaay cheaper, can cook straight from frozen and is about 2% fat! I can't stop raving about it =) I also picked up another veggie trick recently. I found that I was never full if I just ate a regular leafy salad, so to make them more filling, I've started adding a portion of spicy rice.

Come to think of it, I've gradually (and unintentionally) reduced my meaty meals to only about 3-4 out of every breakfast, lunch and dinner each week. Does this make me 80% vegetarian?!

LOL all of the Quorn products are GREAT we use the Quorn "beef" as our taco meat, the Quorn "chicken" in soups and casseroles. We also use morning star farms Hot and Spicy "sausage" for breakfasts and we cook them and grind them and use it as a ground sausage actually made a shepherds pie with it tonight. and I used it as part of a stuffing mix for mushrooms last night. even my teenage kids eat it.

Veg for 23 years (can't believe it's been that long). I always have a pot of beans in the fridge and make my own granola and yogurt. Quinoa is great. I think low fat dairy products aren't really good for you (go organic). Matt Frazier http://www.nomeatathlete.com/ has some good stuff posted. He's a serious runner.

it's funny to me how vegetarians eat food that tastes like meat.

We're a vegetarian family. I've been veg for about 15 years, and my husband wavers between "being a vegetarian" and "not eating meat". Sometimes, he'll decide he's not a vegetarian anymore. Then about a month after he decides he's no longer a vegetarian, he'll eat a tuna fish sandwich. A few weeks later, a couple of slices of bacon. Maybe the week after that, he'll sample a hot wing. After about six months of this, he'll decide he's a vegetarian again.

We'd let the kids eat meat if they wanted, but the 9 year old is rabid about animal abuse and global warming, to the point of boycotting leather. I don't think she's going to be eating meat anytime soon.

Fake meat is definitely not a staple of our diet.

But hey - you should give the Morningstar Farms Black Bean burgers a try. They are deeelicious.

Just wondering, how do you all get enough iron? Are you eating spinach three times a day or are you taking iron supplements?

We died, NickW. And we're still dying from it. In the developing world, anemia is even more widespread due to parasites. They latch on in the intestines and suck the blood. Unfortunately, it causes babies to be born with lower intellectual capacities. And the women sometimes die. Really, really sad.

Anyhow, diet actually doesn't effect iron levels all that much. If your iron is low, either you are bleeding too much or you got unlucky with the genetics. Iron can't be left floating around in the body. It has to be carried around by proteins. If you inherit mostly crappy iron proteins, you're going to unfortunately need supplements. If you're really lucky and aren't bleeding, you can scavenge it out of anywhere. With that said, if you're anemic, you probably need to get the bleeding stopped (if you ARE bleeding) and take iron supplements. Diet can only fix very mild anemia.

Andy, if you have to explain a joke then it's no longer funny.

Well, I don't have anemia. I don't eat red meat at all (I am a pesquearian? seafood only) and I HATE leafy green veggies and my iron was at the absolute lowest end of the bottom range. I take iron supplements, which brought my levels up to normal so I don't have absorption problems at least. This parasite thing is an interesting thought. I will have to talk to my ND about ways of testing for and/or driving out evil parasites that might be hanging out in my intestines. I have sucky genetics in many ways so I wouldn't be surprised if I just suck with regard to iron as well.

I only eat the fake meat as I work anywhere from 36 to 72 hours a week and cannot always make everything in my kitchen. My wife also works 40 + hours a week. But I also only eat a few servings a week of fake meat the rest is fruit and veggies! on top of that I LOVE the taste of meat just not the animal abuse and death that goes with it! just my view! will I ever eat meat again maybe? Don't know!

Where do you live? If it's the US, then it's not likely parasites. The parasites that cause anemia are hookworm, malaria, and schistosomiasis. If you're in the US, though, you could be bleeding due to food allergies, or something like Crohns disease. Or gynecological problems.
