Anyone wanna watch me crash and burn? Barefoot 100 attempt coming up

Jason's = Run until I need to

Jason's = Run until I need to start walking, then walk until I can run again.

Ha! I didn't realize Jason had an ultra training program like that. Sweet. Simple.

I like the Jason formula,

I like the Jason formula, too! Also, I like that the stupider you are, the better your chances of at least starting. bzzz bzzz bzzz

Do you have a crew, BB? Pacer for the later stages? (I checked my appointment calendar and I won't be able to do it, sorry). The way you're writing, it sounds like you'll be solo. Except, you'll be coming past the start/finish area which does seem to be pretty well-stocked, and comes up every ten Km. Do you really need to carry a liter (Kg) of liquid with you? You can access your supplies on every lap.

It would cool if you have a miobile flat rate and can give live updates on your progress! With video feed :)

No crew and no pacers of my

No crew and no pacers of my own, not yet at least. There will be pacers available for anyone to (ab)use once it gets dark though and I have most of my family in the area for some support. They all think I'm nuts, but that's nothing new.

Yeah, the hydration/aid station bit. I'm certain I don't need a liter of liquid to drink every lap but I think I need more than half of that, I do sweat a lot. I'm going to do more exact calculations soon to figure this out. I'm also looking ahead at the other races I want to do and this is the most well-supported in terms of aid-station frequency so in those races, in warmer weather as well, I think I'd welcome the extra capacity. After all, I don't have to fill the bottles all the way up when I need less. I'm also considering going with only one bottle and "topping up" as needed at the aid station. And yes, having access to my own bag and stash of whatever essentials and bribes I have there is something I plan on taking full advantage of.

Video? You sure about that? I'm ugly and incoherent enough when I try to talk under normal circumstances. I have a feeling ultra-running wouldn't exactly do wonders for either of those. Seriously though, even though I swore I'd never do it, I'm thinking of getting a twitter account just for the race. I think I should be able to manage

Smallish update: My throat

Smallish update: My throat refused to stop hurting until a couple of days ago so I haven't been running at all since January 15. I have, however, run 20 k today and am going to try to run more. Why? Because there's an ultra interval session going on on a Swedish forum. 8x10 k starting every three hours and I'm going to try to complete as many as I can. I seem to have lost a lot of fitness though, I have to choose between barely moving or running with my heart rate way too high.

I've also managed to solve the hydration pack thing. I found a small backpack with bottles instead of a bladder so it's the best of both worlds really. It has room for everything I need to carry and then some. http://eu.thenorthface.com/tnf-eu-en/activity/trail-running/equipment/tech-packs/enduro-13-hydration-pack.html?colour=13896#item=enduro_13_hydration_pack_2

The only things I need now is a light and disgusting amounts of lube.

Disgusting amounts of lube,

Disgusting amounts of lube, huh?

Yes. To prevent chafing. Did

Yes. To prevent chafing. Did you think it was for something else? :innocent:

Update on the intervals. Decided to scrap them after the first two. I haven't been sleeping well this week and my thighs didn't want to play nice so doing all eight of them wouldn't have been possible. I'll do a long run tomorrow instead.

Simply put it hasn't been going well. According to the plan I made when I signed up I would at this point be running 40-50 km runs on a weekly basis. The longest I've managed so far is about 20. If you want all the boring details just check my training log on Funbeat, it's open to everyone. I've kind of shifted focus from doing the 100 and maybe, if I really have to, drop out at 50 to at least making it to 50 and then see what happens. I believe they still let you switch distances during the race. Right now I doubt I'll even make it to 50 if I'm completely honest with myself but it's been clear from the start that I need to trick myself into believing I can do it if I'm going to have any chance at finishing.

Another consequence is that I've let TEC slip down to "training race" status just to make it easier on myself. The races I'll be focusing on this year are Lapland Ultra, Holaveden and/or SUM. That being said, if I have a decent chance of finishing at TEC I'll make sure I do. I just won't be too upset if I don't.

Who are you on Funbeat by the way? I understand if you don't want to say in public, I just like to keep track of who I'm talking to.

:) no problem at all, i'm Mikael from Sundsvall, i'll drop a note over there as well. I'm not really a frequent poster but more of a reader you could say, both here and there. This is interesting though!
Sorry to hear about you training but you still have some time to get your kilometers up altough spring is coming surprisingly early, at least down here. Can't believe its Mars already so i can understand your situation since it's closing in.

It's great that you have the chance to aim at 50miles during the race and i'll guess you have to take it from there.
How do you feel your soles are holding up btw? I have a hard time keeping them strong with only a few km's bare at the end of my runs this time of the year but i guess they come back pretty fast when you can log some asphalt again.

Yeah, spring is very early here too. I looked at pictures I have from the past few years and the snow conditions around here shouldn't be like this for another two to three weeks and the ice on the lakes is off by about a month or maybe more. It's been a weird winter for sure but that should mean that this will be the perfect year to run TEC barefoot. If I remember correctly previous years it's been unclear up until maybe a week before what course they were going to use due to snow. I don't think that will be the case this year.

I normally don't have any problems with sole conditioning at the start of the season but 100 miles is a bit different from what I normally run in April. What I've done this year is run a big percentage of my miles on a treadmill. Sure, it's not the same as running outside but I figure it might be enough to maintain conditioning through the winter. I've also ordered a pair of huaraches that I plan on using without socks as much as I can day to day before the race to get my feet used to the cold again.

Lapland Ultra is a cool race for sure. I'm really looking forward to the evening start and running through the night, or what passes for night there. I just realized it'll be darker there than here by then though. Holaveden is one of those races that I've known all along that I need to run at some point. My mother grew up in Gränna so I know the terrain type well even though I haven't checked out the trails they're using. I have however hiked the first few kilometers and they're brutal. You gain maybe 200 meters of altitude right from the start and then there's only 50k of not-exactly-flat trail and gravel roads left. Fun. ;)

This is getting way too real. I've just packed everything I need for the race since I'm leaving for Stockholm tomorrow. Still more than a week to go before the race but I'll be staying with my parents for the coming week up until race time.

I've got a few workouts left before the race, one more long-ish run on Friday with a group of friends for fun. Saturday I'll be helping my parents move so that should count as cross-training. ;) Then in the week leading up to the race I'm hoping to get in a few short trail runs just to get my mind moving at the required pace.

I'll try to check in here a few times but internet access is usually very limited where I'll be staying, or at least time for it. Also, I've created a twitter account and if I feel up for it I'll try to post an update per lap (10 kms / 16 laps) or something during the race. Here it is: http://twitter.com/#!/fringeact

Well, I wish you TONS of luck and even more fun!

What was your longest training run, BB?

Thanks, TJ. I'll need all the luck I can get for sure. My longest training run was 4 hours, or about 30 km so to say that I'm not really trained for the distance is the understatement of the decade. As I've said before I'm perfectly fine with dropping out at 50 miles if I have to.

I know you are. It's the not the destination, is it, but rather the journey.

Whens race day?

Good luck man! I hope you get it!

Good luck we will be thinking of you as you shuffle along. Have a great run

Thanks for all the well wishes but I DNS'd. Why? Two reasons. First, I decided to leave my trusted wool socks and thermal tights at home and it snowed heavily last night and all morning. Not only was it colder than what I had clothes for, the snow was bad enough to force the organizers to move the start 2 hours so that they could clear the course from trees that had fallen across the course. All due to the snow. Hypothermia isn't as fun as it might seem.
Second, I had something that felt like bad pre-race nerves but it became increasingly clear as I waited for the delayed start that it was more than that. Both my daughter and I have a stomach bug now, not exactly how I'd planned on spending the day and night. :(
