Didn't care for it at first, now I'm a total convert.
Rolling calves, rolling thighs, rolling before running, rolling after running, rolling here, rolling in my office, keeps me running happy happy.
Thanks to all those who talked about it here.
I'll never look at 4" pvc pipe the same way.

That's all I've got to say.

glad you got in into it, sced. Rolling makes a huge difference in many ways!

One of these days I'm going to get up the nerve to put together a video demonstrating the next step beyong rolling. It involves one of these:

I have a 4" PVC pipe at home with some "sill seal" foam wrapped around it. But I find it easier to roll on this big 6"-7" diameter roll of 36" plotter paper at the office. It's got a damaged cardboard core so it can never be used in our plotter, so I have put it to use by using it to roll before and after running.
 
It must be entertaining for your coworkers to watch you roll your glutes and such. I'm a roller believer, too. It work even better to have a well trained GF (or equivalent) do the honors.
 
Well I usually hide in the print room while doing it. Sometimes I'll shut the door. :p

lol, I am my own dummy! I did make a video already, but it looked so whacky (get it?) that I chickened-out and didn't post it.

Basically, I kneel down on the floor, lean back to get a bit of a stretch in my thighs and flexors, and then start whapping the muscles with the hammer, especially the flexor region. Hurts, yes, but in a good way and the difference in range of motion afterwards is enormous. It also boosts the 'rebuilding', self-repair function of the muscles (struggling to find the right description for that) and even builds up strength.

I whap along the tractus (IT band) and guteus and other places, even the abs. The only real risky part if I bang directly on a bone - ouch! And I don't think there's any benefit to doing that at all, lol.

There are a lot of similar techniques used in the martial arts and "hard" Qigong. I didn't think this stuff up out of the blue!
