The fine art of trolling

I just discovered this "debunking" site against barefooting.

http://www.runningbarefootisbad.com/category/uncategorized/

I realize that the aim of the author is to get page hits and possibly tap the stream of potential incomes from shoe manufacturers... unfortunately shoe companies are less likely to finance bad science (aka "debunking") sites as for instance tobacco firms or climate change "sceptics". While the latter happily endorse such things, shoe company just jump massively into the new niche. Why shouldn't they? It's on one hand a new market and on the other it's a way of cajoling people into throwing away their old shoes and buying new ones.

I agree that a good amount of scepticism is basic for most of the things you meet in live... but you can't just try to "debunk" things throwing in a load of pure bullshit. Because one thing is citing counterfeit studies and making bad science and another quite different is being a total nut job. And I am afraid that our dear author belongs to the latter type. Just check out his statement:

Sorry, but my only reaction can be "WTF?"

There is unfortunately a thing called common sense and it tells me that the author of this study must be under the influence of extremely heavy substance abuse. You don't need to read Dr. Lieberman's study. You in fact don't need to read anything:

We are not born shod, sorry. And neither did we evolve shod. Even if you are a hardcore creationist you have to recall that there are right now some thousands of millions of people in the world who run and walk barefoot (does the word "Africa" ring a bell?).

I would also be extremely intrigued on how our poor blind ancestors were able to survive in the middle of Olduvai Gorge escaping lions and hyenas... or maybe the powerful World Lobby of Barefoot Scientists has hidden way the evidence of the fossilized Nikes with pronation control found next to Lucy's skeleton. Betcha, this Secret Government of Barefooters are surely conspiring to render us all blind in order to prepare an alien invasion and convert the Earth into a thrall of the Klingon Empire.

But the painful truth is that you don't even need to go as far as Africa or as back in time as the palaeolithic: Even if you don't believe that the world is older than a few thousand of years you need to recall that the Roman legions did run, and quite a lot actually, in what's barely a piece of leather strapped to their feet. And they didn't to too bad if you have to judge by the fact that they owned almost the whole of Europe and a good share of Asia and Africa. Not bad for a bunch of blind guys crippled by injuries!

And what about Abebe Bikila or Zola Budd. Bad news: barefoot running has always been part of regular athletic training.

To make matters worse, we all use to run barefoot when we are kids, doesn't we?
Thus: Where are these legions of blind and mutilated?

Sorry mate, your blog is fun I agree, but at least you could have left the comment enabled.

Isn't this the one related to Road Runner Sports?

Interesting how comments are closed on all the blog entries. He's obviously scared of being proven wrong.

Yes, it's the guy who's in bed with Road Runner Sports shoe store. Don't let him get under your skin.

I like the part where he says that there is no scientific proof that high impacts cause injury. He should know, since it appears he's had quite a few high impact blows to the head.

Oh crap. Did I just feed a troll? Oh I hope not.....'cause once you feed 'em, they never want to leave......

I had no idea that nutjob was related to Roadrunner. Yet another reason to not like that crappy store. They ignore me anytime I go in there. Literally they know me as the barefoot guy and they go out of their way to not sell me anything and don't ever want to answer my questions. Oh and btw Enric, they sell minimal shoes and have probably the biggest selection of vff's that you can find around here. They try to put every one in cushiony shoes and not the minimal stuff though. They only sell the min shoes when people come in and ask for them. None of the clerks in our local store will recommend them unless they are directly asked for. The last time I walked in there to try vff's they told me to look at the local Oregonian article about how vff's cause stress fractures. I told the rep that in fact, no vff's do not cause the stress fractures, people not listening to their bodies and doing to much to soon causes them. I then told her if she really wants to look at who's to blame she can look at all those supportive shoes she pushes on everyone that weakened and deformed everyone's feet in the first place. She shut up after that but was less than helpful. I refuse to go in that store anymore. I drive a half hour out of my way to go to another running specialty store that actually has knowledgeable clerks that know and do minimal running.

I'm not 100% sure of this (let's say... 70%) but I think the guy who maintains that site is a RRS salesperson (or purchaser? Something like that). It came up at that other place and somebody had some insider-info on it. But then as now, it really wasn't all that interesting to me so I'm pretty foggy on the details.

Anyway, Enric - maybe you should remove the hot links from your post and just write the name of his trollstite in plain text? Not sure, but it could be that just having the links in these forums will give him a blip of recognition in the search engines.

I think I will troll anyone of my 6 (may be 7 or 8) websites I own, especially theshortwhiteguy.com and try to debunk my shortness!

This guy sure does keep his website up to date.

I'm pretty sure the dude behind the site is a podiatrist in Australia. I know his identity is known, I just don't remember the details. Early in the site's history, he had a lot of Road Runner ads. Worth noting- many of the Road Runner stores are coming around to minimalism... and it seems to be a store-to-store thing.

Didn't you write a "friendly little letter" to Road Runner Sports a while back, Jason?

Oh, pooh. I was hoping to relive the good ole days.

Shouldn't that be Dr. Pain? Dispensing the pain, baby, dispensing the pain.
