Im sure many of you have already read the book, "Born to Run".

Well in the book they talk about how the Tarahumara, wear huaraches to run. Which are simply a thin piece of rubber strapped to your foot.

So I tried to make a cheap huarache. What I did was, bought a pair of sandals, Cut 1 of the sandals(flip-flops) in half(to make thinner) and use a shoe lace to tie around my foot.

I only used one sandal, cause i didnt need more, and i could use the second for backup.

So I was all proud when I finished them, so I decided to go out for a run.

I didnt even make it to the next street......... :eek:ups:

The problem was that the hole between my big toe and long toe(index foot toe?) was too big and my knot wasnt big enough, so it just came right out..

Can someone help me with this problem? Maybe on how to make thicker knots? Or how to make the hole smaller.

Thanks.

I made some last week using

I made some last week using some cheap rubber automotive floor mats and leather shoe laces. The rubber measures about 1.85 mm according to my digital micrometer, so they're really flexible. It pretty much molded to the contours of my foot soles. I used the slip-on lacing method illustrated on the Luna Sandals website. To make the holes I just barely punctured the rubber with an X-acto knife, and made it just big enough to get the lace through.

I haven't actually worn them out anywhere yet. I still prefer full BF over anything else. I actually made them as a "backup" that could be rolled up and stuck into pockets, in case anyone tells me I need shoes on to be in a store or something. But so far I haven't needed them.

Check out the Alternative

Check out the Alternative tying method. Can anyone provide a link here, please?

Also, the Tarahumara actually run in some pretty thick car/truck tire rubber. Not the thin stuff we tend to buy and make here in The States.

Brilliant suggestion right

Brilliant suggestion right there.

The hole in the washer would

The hole in the washer would have to be just big enough for the lace to pass through, in order to keep the knot from coming through.

I made these 2 days ago. They

I made these 2 days ago. They are Prototype BV2(Bryan's Version 2).

As you can see there, I bought a thin leather material. About 4mm.

The foot on the left (My right foot) fit perfectly , but the one on the right, you can see a little left over material by the big toe. I cut that off.

The picture was taken before my run and I cant find the camera to show you what they look like now.

The tieing method there was horrible! I just wrapped those laces around my leg, without a method. Thats something that I did not like. I was stupid not looking up how to tie them.

Now I use this tieing method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRdYlSgkBAY

Well I went on a 25k run in the city (up and down hills) and I gotta tell you that it was amazing. Cause when im barefoot, i cant step on glass and rocks, but now I can. So it was like i was free and i could run where ever I wanted.

so i gotta say this BV2 is lookin good.

Sorry, back on topic...If you're using a flat lace I'd watch out for it loosening when wet or stretching out, just a head's up.

As to the washer idea, I came on it when I had a tear in a poorly punched lace-hole and wanted to reduce the pressure. Home Despot usually has loose washers in the hardware section, just take a short segment of lace and knot it to test them. I'd look for a thin washer with a wide "ring" to distribute the force on the bottom of the sole. you could theoretically get away with a smaller knot and reduce the underfoot bump if you find the perfect sized opening. I'll see if I can find a pic of it (not in use on my current huaraches so can't find it...)

I made a pair of huaraches

I made a pair of huaraches that have held up pretty well. Bought some thick leather scraps off a local leather-worker that fit my foot, traced 'em out (using the Invisible Shoe suggestions). Cut the leather with an exacto-knife, used a leather punch to put the holes in, and have been experimenting with laces. The sandals form perfectly to the feet, especially when wet--a wet foot print looks identical to barefoot! Haven't figured out how to post pics, but I think my profile-pic should come up as one of my sandals

I went to the tractor supply

I went to the tractor supply store and bought some tractor belt and used a hole puncher used for leather to make the holes. They have been pretty sturdy and I've had them for 2 years or so.

The Invisible Shoe

The Invisible Shoe instructions were pretty good. Luna Sandals also has useful instructions up:

The front (toe) hole should be small enough that it's a little difficult, at least at first, to get the lace through. It sounds like you got everything worked out, already, so congrats! Glad they worked well.
