Hi to all,

I'm a new member residing in FL, orginally from NYC. I'm also member on the Dailymile (http://www.dailymile.com/people/SRamFL#ref=tophd) under the same user name...so be sure to "friend" me. I'm also a forum member over at www.birthdayshoes.com.

I'm still new to minimalist running; took me the better part of seven or eight months to "find" my forefoot consistently, mostly because I had injured my left knee late in 2010. Came off a recent ankle (re)injury. Now off to shoulder surgery (ugh) which means no more running for nearly two months.

One minimalist newbie problem I have is coming down too hard during my footfalls leading to "hot feet" whenever I use anything but VFFs. Any tips will be appreciated.

Anyhow...happy weekend to all.

Welcome!! What part of

Welcome!! What part of Florida are you from?

As far as your problem, I recommend running barefoot for a little while. Running barefoot (real barefoot, not minimalist shoes) will help your body to learn what its doing, our not doing, very quickly. Which will in turn help you out with your issues.

Good luck with your running and surgeries! Hope everything goes good!!!

Be sure to join the Florida

Be sure to join the Florida Chapter nearest you. We have four or five of them now. You can join up to four chapters. Find the Chapters tab up top.

When you do get back to running, try ditching all footwear and go barefoot until you can aquire a proper running form for you. You'll find that when you run barefoot, you not only lessen your chance of heel-striking but you no doubt will run more lightly. Later, add the shoes back in as you need them. Although, when I put even VFFs on, I go back to my old heel-striking ways and land much harder.

Welcome!

Hi and thanks for the

Hi and thanks for the welcome! I am located in the Fort Lauderdale area. I ran a few feet out in my driveway while barefoot....it felt really good. As soon as I usually get home...its off with any shoes and walk everywhere (in my house) sans shoes. I will take the suggestions to heart and do some runs with no shoes to get very well acquainted with my forefoot.

I'll later post a photo of the sole of my VB Evo's to show the shoes' wear pattern compared to some "regular" running shoes....quiet a difference!

Welcome - is it SenioR

Welcome - is it SenioR AMerican in FLorida? Whatever it stands for, we're glad to have you here. I started in VFFs and stress fractured my left foot hitting hard like you're doing.
Once I changed over to truly BF, my stride got a lot shorter, my cadence a lot faster, and my footfalls incredibly lighter. I've got to wholeheartedly recommend learning BF first. I think you'll find about as much difference in your form between VFFs and BF as you have between boat anchors and VFFs.

Do you watch Gator Boys on

Do you watch Gator Boys on the History Channel (why there, I don't know)? I love that show. The remove the gators from areas where humans are and place them in other safe areas. There's one guy there who goes around barefoot.

I just happened to watch it

I just happened to watch it for the first time early this morning!! There is a guy who has won the double iron man on there too! It is awesome! Alligator tastes so good. I have a friend who moved to Florida and within a week had had a picture of a gator he caught and put in his bath tub. So I figure everyone in Florida does this. Of course he spent some time living in Huntsville, so he is a bit different.

You're talking about the

You're talking about the tall, blond guy? He's also a veterinarian . Cool group of kids.

Gator is good....no gators

Gator is good....no gators where I currently live...when I lived in Tampa and would visit my wife, then GF, in Pasco County, smallers one would come up the banks and just hang out.

Thanks for the barefoot encouragement....over the weekend, I did some short barefoot running drills; found myself constantly looking down at the ground to make sure I didn't step on anything that might hurt. It did seem like I wasn't landing hard.....need to do more of that.

You mean like gators? Hee.

On the last Gator Boys show I saw, they were taking baby gators from their nests when the mommas were away. The little baby gators cried and cried, sounded just like baby kittens. So sad. They say they have to do this to spread out the population, or the gators would take those areas over completely, which would make it bad for both the gators and people. Still very sad. They miss their mommas, and their mommas miss them. I wish they could figure out how to take the nest with the mommas and then relocated them all together, unless they have found that the mommas will end up abandoning their babies after they've been disrupted like that.

I STARTED running in VFF's

I STARTED running in VFF's before I even knew that barefoot was cool. Now I find that I am carrying them more than I am wearing them. As much as I swear my stride isn't any different in them, I know deep down that it is and that is evident the moment I take them off. I do land lighter without them. My legs are a lot more relaxed during bare runs as well.

Welcome to BRS and to the Sunny South.
