Running shorts?

So in my short running time, I have pretty much had one pair of blue adidas shorts the entire time. They are pretty thin and come to almost my knee. I have come back from long runs where they are completely soaked and heavy. I am thinking about getting a second pair. Hopefully something I could wear at RRUM. So that means something that will be okay between 40 and 65 degrees, most likely, and for a slower pace. Anyone have ideas on running shorts? Is there an advantage to short vs. longer shorts for these situations?

I have been wearing "short"

I have been wearing "short" running shorts for years now. I couldn't even imagine running in something that would come to my knees, even if it's mid-thigh I would go nuts.

For me the shorter the better, the shortest pair I have are 2 1/4" inseam, it's basically running in loose speedo. And no underwear of anything like that, I like the netting.

The advantage is just the pure comfort.

I run in a mid length short.

I run in a mid length short. I don't care for the shorty shorts Gentile was talking about myself. The week before my heel crapped out on me I started using these really thin compression short liners under my midlength shorts because I was having some chaffing issues on my longer runs and I can say while wearing them I never got chaffing. They are nice and lightweight and for me that is very important as I get hot really easy. They are (I can't believe I'm going to even say the brand because I hate their store) roadrunner sports brand of compression liner and you get two in a pack. The cost is around $30 for the pack of two which is around the cost of just one pair of actual compression shorts.

I was a dedicated compression

I was a dedicated compression shorts man myself for years. But now I wear those 'single cutaway' skimpy bloomers and really can't see going back. I've been wearing them all the winter, too. It hasn't gotten that cold, but I've been out in as low as -5°C with them, no probs. I got used to the cold somehow.

Anyway, yeah, it's about time you got out of those Adidas pyjama pants, bro!

I got shorts from Hammer

I got shorts from Hammer Nutrition, but you can order directly from RaceReady. The "Long Distance" models have lots of pockets that I never use (mesh and I am afraid things will fall out). I do like the side pockets that are closed with velcro. The shorts are light and dry fast and have a liner. Made in USA.

I also have some "short" shorts that are nice to run in, but I only use them for shorter runs (no pockets).

Once you run in minimal shorts, it's hard to go back to the basketball shorts.

I wear mine to my knees too.

I wear mine to my knees too. I had to wear the short stuff when I competed and I hated it. If you like the length you have there are tons of options for you out there. I personally have worn Nike shorts for about as long as I can remember because I love the weight, feel, and cut of the shorts. They've also got pockets. I can wear my shorts in temps down in the 30's without anything under them but it's more comfortable to wear a pair of compression shorts when it's cold. For warmth I have a cheap pair I got from Wal-Mart for $10 made by Starter. For more support and muscle fatigue help I have a few different brands.

I've also been wearing some shorts from a company called illumiNITE and I really like them. The fit and feel are great plus they have a cool way of putting reflective material on clothing so it looks normal. It's a coating on the material so you don't have to wear something neon colored or covered in big silver stripes to be seen. The stuff looks totally normal during the day and shines like a light bulb when someone puts light on it in the dark. Great idea and really good product.

Shorts? I thought this was a

Shorts? I thought this was a minimalist crowd! Run free, run happy, run naked!

Do we really need shorts boys?

You for sure want to get some

You for sure want to get some real running shorts. Like BF Gen said, the shorter the better. I really like the NB shorts that I picked up on clearance last fall. I have 5" and 3" and typically run in the 5" during the day when I might see someone and in the 3" at night and early morning. I prefer the feel of the 3" but I am not totally comfortable standing around in them talking with the neighbors. One other thing, the liners in them are smoother than a pair of French silk panties!

I tried running an ultra in a pair of regular shorts that just had a normal liner and the results were disastrous. The liner rubbed the boys raw and then, post race, the raw boys were oozing and that later dried to the liner. My shorts and I had become one... needless to say, trying to take them off was less than enjoyable.

My brother got the nick name

My brother got the nick name Winnie the Pooh at a music festival once. Why? He dressed like Winnie, red shirt and nothing else.

I knew by the title of this

I knew by the title of this thread that it would go downhill quickly. :tired:

I think I am convinced to

I think I am convinced to look for some shorter running shorts. The shorts I have are running shorts, they are just longer. Maybe since I am gonna look ridiculous anyhow, I'll get some of those tiny Texas flag shorts. My wife is already making fun of me either way.

I like the idea of going with no shorts but doubt that is allowed and think 50 miles of flopping would be bad. One time in Iraq I came into by room with just a shirt on and my roommate said only girls do that. But I was comfortable. Made it easier to give him the goat when he came back from the bathroom.

I never ran an ultra, but I can totally see having an issue like that with the liner. For a marathon I lay on the body glide really thick all over where the liner lays, works great, but I am sure for an ultra you would need to re-apply.

Another thing I do which is really comfy and eliminates chaffing, and probably a good thing to wear for an ultra. I cut the liner out of the running shorts and wear Under Armour Compression boxers, it's nice combo.

Ink n Burn makes some of the

Ink n Burn makes some of the best shorts I've ever worn. A bit on the pricey side but they are well worth it in my opinion.

Great color patterns and a great feel to them as well. My only wish is that they had a zip or velcro pocket in the back.

I've worn mine on a couple ultras as well as in a 95* torturous uphill climp and freezing rain/wind. No issues with either.

I'm more of a kilt kinda guy but when I do reach for shorts, it's always the InB pair first. And their shirts are pretty awesome as well.
