I love trails at night, they are down right fun. I run with a headlamp and a handheld as Jason said the handheld is great for creating shadows and showing the texture of the trail. The lamp I use is a SCUBA handheld with a very wide ange flood characteristic. The headlamp is a Black Diamond mountaineering spot that has about six levels of brightness. Both are LED so they get good battery life and if dropped the filiment doesn't break
