Flat Feet

There are definitely stories

There are definitely stories of people with flat feet who have gone to barefoot running successfully. Some develop arches - others do not. Development of an arch isn't a requirement for success, from what I understand.

My feet went flat while I was

My feet went flat while I was in the military and then a year ago my podiatrist told me that I would never get the arches back and that I needed orthotics to support my feet (also supposedly have degeneritive arthritis in the one foot). I've now been barefooting for about 6 months now and I can see a definate change in the arches of my feet. Not sure if this is rare or common, but for me I have developed more arch and my feet are much healthier.

Flat archer. Take an

Flat archer. Take an impression of your foot to record any changes. It is always cool to see the changes in the foot over time. The foot has ~100 muscles. If strenthening had no affect then there would be no body builders. :)

I used to have flat feet, and

I used to have flat feet, and I overpronated. Now I have a nice arch, and because my arch muscles are higher, I don't pronate as much anymore, not that pronating is a bad thing.

I am another one who had

I am another one who had fairly flat feet, and now after about 18 months of running barefoot or minimalistic when the temps were to cold, I have developed a nice arch as well. Wish I would of taken some pics and imprints of the before and afters but who would of known.

Yea, me to.  I hope everyone

Yea, me to. I hope everyone else starting out does though. And it's not just the arch that changes, but some people say their feet are wider. It would be nice to have before and afters in our Library.

I'm a little hesitant to show

I'm a little hesitant to show these - because it's so unscientific I question the value. That being said - it is interesting to compare the two. The first photo is from a little over a year ago. The second photo was taken this evening. While I got out of orthotics and wearing more minimal shoes at the time of the first photo - I've only been doing real barefoot walking and a tiny amount of running for the last month or so.

What I've found is that these photos are highly susceptible to the amount of water on the feet, how much you consciously try to flatten out your foot, etc. Regarding the latter point - I am finding it harder and harder to get the medial side of the foot to touch the ground - because that arch is forming.

Thanks for all the feed back!

Thanks for all the feed back! I have been running barefoot and wearing viabrams as my normal shoes so hopefully i will get an arch. But are people born with flat feet?

With a raised arch, can you

With a raised arch, can you become taller? In my family, we like to measure our kids (and the cat, the other one won't take part in this nonsense, so she says) on the wall with a pencil. We mark the line and the date making sure the feet are flat on the floor. As a joke my kids wanted to see how tall I was, so my husband marked me on the wall. That was on 10/03/10, I sh!t you not, one year ago! Last night, we were talking about how our oldest has grown a bunch in the last almost four months, 3/4". At the time, my son tried to measure me, but since he is shorter than me, I wasn't sure he was getting an accurate measurement. He marked me taller than I was one year ago. So last night, I had my husband mark me, and I show 1" growth in one year! I can't believe it myself, but it's true! So what do you all think of this?

No.  I thought of that.  I

No. I thought of that. I always stand as straight as I can to make the tallest possible mark, even at the doctor's office, since I've always been short. If I slouch, then I'm even shorter.

I've always been short and do

I've always been short and do the same thing! Lol! A year ago I was measured at the VA and they told me I was a full inch shorter than when I was in the Army.

Not sure if it was the back surgeries or the extra 40lbs I was carrying weighting down my body or what. Kind of a bummer...

That makes sense though.  I

That makes sense though. I could see the weight and back surgeries causing someone to be shorter. But could my arches rising cause me to get taller? I wish I knew. I doubt I will grow much more than that though.

That is weird TJ. I wouldn't

That is weird TJ. I wouldn't think higher arches would make you any taller. I could see thicker heels making you taller, but what do I know, I'm no dr.

Barefoot tj I had to look up

Barefoot tj I had to look up pronation and my ankles pronate inward also. So running barefoot fixed that to. That makes me very happy and more determined to stick with it. ;)

It's well worth it, even

It's well worth it, even though there is nothing wrong with flat feet or pronation. The best part is it's just so much fun!

Since your height comes up

Since your height comes up from your heel, I don't think a higher arch can make you taller. Too bad:< I could use the height too.

As far as my flat feet go, I do believe I have more of an arch and a meatier foot.

Blacksmoke, the thread is

Blacksmoke,

the thread is correct. there are functional flat feet....travel to any developing part of the world where folks live barefoot. they have flat feet as the arch is muscle filled for the most part.

many westerners have "fallen" or "failing" arches. this can be caused be a number of things and of course the foot and arch can be strengthened for function. correcting hallux valgus helps also as this recreates the front of the arch....the big toe.
