Tired of hearing "You are going to pick up some disease"

Thanks,  Ahcuah and Board.

Thanks, Ahcuah and Board. I'll read this later when I have a moment.

I hear that sort of comment

I hear that sort of comment when I go out running in the cold all the time. Many of my runs are during my lunch break so its kinda hard to walk away from these people. The one thing that usually shuts them up is when I don't get sick.

Bob's (Ahcuah) summary pretty

Bob's (Ahcuah) summary pretty much covers it all. Nice job. Gonna be pretty rare for you to catch hookworm from running.

I actually had a patient go to Mexico to actually infect himself with hookworm to see if it would help with his Crohn's. (You can buy them there and then let them burrow thru your skin in your arm.) He's had trouble keeping them alive, and the benefits of immune stimulation have not outweighed some of the side effects of immune suppression as well as anemia issues.

I got the disease line the

I got the disease line the other day from my neighbor, who looked at my feet, bug-eyed, and said "It's all fun until you get some disease, or step on a STICK!"

Later that weekend I went for a barefoot hike and made a point to shout, "OMG I stepped on a stick! OMG I stepped on another stick! The pain!! It's unbearable!!" ironically to my husband. Got some good scrambling in on the rocks in the mountains though.

I figure human skin was made to at least attempt to repel disease. Isn't that what they used to tell us in school? Skin is a protective, bacteria-rich organ, whose main job is to protect the body from disease, among other things?

Now, I am curious to know, I

Now, I am curious to know, I seem to remember something from school as a kid about footwear helped get rid of a lot of diseases that were around at the time. Not sure if I remember this correctly or not, but I grew up in MT and they still have a law on the books that it is illegal to spit on the sidewalk. I think this was because at the time TB was rampant and people would step in the spit barefoot and would end up contracting this. Does anyone know if this is true or if I am misremembering this? It's not going to stop me from barefooting, but I am curious now about this and it would be nice to be able to give my wife facts so that she can stop worrying. Great topic btw BG

TB is transmitted by

TB is transmitted by inhalation of the bacteria that causes it, not by stepping in it.

Hookworm is the only disease that was "eliminated" by shoe wearing in the U.S., but getting rid of communal latrines

was the real fix. Shoe wearing reduced the numbers of new cases, but other diseases are still spread until the latrine is gone.

So shoe wearing wasn't neccesary then, and certainly is not now.

There were plenty of silly warnings taught in health class, so your memory is probably correct.

Great! Thanks for the info

Great! Thanks for the info Longboard. I think it was actually History class that we were taught about this but it's been two decades since that class so I don't remember much that they said, just bits and pieces.

Mon, I just realized that MANY Marley tunes are suitable replies!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LanCLS_hIo4&feature=related

"Don't worry about a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right.

Singin': "Don't worry about a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"

Rise up this mornin',

Smiled with the risin' sun,

Three little birds

Pitch by my doorstep

Singin' sweet songs

Of melodies pure and true,

Sayin', ("This is my message to you-ou-ou:")

Singin': "Don't worry 'bout a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."

Singin': "Don't worry (don't worry) 'bout a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"

Rise up this mornin',

Smiled with the risin' sun,

Three little birds

Pitch by my doorstep

Singin' sweet songs

Of melodies pure and true,

Sayin', "This is my message to you-ou-ou:"

Singin': "Don't worry about a thing, worry about a thing, oh!

Every little thing gonna be all right. Don't worry!"

Singin': "Don't worry about a thing" - I won't worry!

"'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."

Singin': "Don't worry about a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right" - I won't worry!

Singin': "Don't worry about a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."

Singin': "Don't worry about a thing, oh no!

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!

Or even a BRS theme

Or even a BRS theme song.

Just think Pirates and merchant ships really refers to the large shoe companies and running stores using the fraudulant fitting systems, hand of course means foot, atomic energy means overly built-up shoe products, and "the book" of course is Born To Run.

Take your pick for "The Almighty".....Chris? Ted? KenBob? Jason? TJ???? (the others will be the prophets)

And the "they" attempting to kill those prophets? Why the old-school media savy podiatrists of course!

Old pirates, yes, they rob I;

Sold I to the merchant ships,

Minutes after they took I

From the bottomless pit.

But my hand was made strong

By the hand of the Almighty.

We forward in this generation

Triumphantly.

Won't you help to sing

These songs of freedom?

'Cause all I ever have:

Redemption songs,

Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;

None but ourselves can free our minds.

Have no fear for atomic energy,

'Cause none of them can stop the time.

How long shall they kill our prophets,

While we stand aside and look? Ooh!

Some say it's just a part of it:

We've got to fulfill the Book.

Won't you help to sing

These songs of freedom?

'Cause all I ever have:

Redemption songs,

Redemption songs,

Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;

None but ourselves can free our mind.

Wo! Have no fear for atomic energy,

'Cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time.

How long shall they kill our prophets,

While we stand aside and look?

Yes, some say it's just a part of it:

We've got to fulfill the book.

Won't you have to sing

These songs of freedom? -

'Cause all I ever had:

Okay now, Board.  I want to

Okay now, Board. I want to hear you record that and post a link to it here. Hee.

Well TJ, as you know the

Well TJ, as you know the American Podiatric Association has already adopted a Bob Marley song as THEIR official theme song....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8GCc8OhTz8

Oh! please don't you rock my boat

Cause I don't want my boat to be rocking

Don't rock my boat (repeat)

I'm telling you that, oh, whooh-whooh

I like it, like this, I like it like this

And you should know, you should know by now

I like it, I like it like this, I like it like this

Yeah! you satisfy my soul, satisfy my soul

You satisfy my soul, satisfy my soul

Every little action, there is a reaction

Oh can't you see, what you have done for me

I am happy inside, all, all of the time

When we bend a new corner

I feel like a sweep-stake winner

When I meet you around the corner

You make me feel like, a sweep-stake winner

Whoa child, can't you see, you must believe me

Oh darling, darling, I'm calling, calling

Can't you see, why won't you believe me

Oh darling, darling, I'm calling, calling

When I meet you around the corner

Oh I said baby, never let me be a loner

And then you hold me tight, you make me feel alright

Yes when you hold me tight, you made me feel alright

Whoa honey can't you see, don't you believe me

Oh, darling, darling, I'm calling, calling

Can't you see, why won't you believe me

Oh darling, darling, I'm calling, calling

Satisfy my soul, satisfy my soul, satisfy my soul

That's all I want from you, that's all I'll take from you

Satisfy my soul, satisfy my soul

On the subject of Crohn's and

On the subject of Crohn's and other autoimune syndromes that respond to (go into remission) infection by parasites like hookworm, there's a fascinating book called The Wild Life of Our Bodies by Rob Dunn just come out recently. It makes a great case for there being such a thing as too much clean.

I've never been a fan of rappers but now that Snoop Dog has become Snoop Lion and has recorded a new cut with Eddie Murphy of all people I think a great new reggae tune has arrived!

Didn't expect something that good when I clicked on your link! Wow.

Yeah I really like it. As with many of my favorite Reggae tunes from the 70's I don't necessarily agree with all the lyrics, but if I ignore the smokn' blunts line I can relate Snoop's lite rap near the end to running, cycling, and skating the streets. Not what he had in mind but I'll make that stretch just to be able to enjoy the music even more.
