Barefoot/minimalist running coach in the news: (videos)

Hey all, just wanted to take a second to share:

I had an awesome opportunity to lead a 7 week (1 day a week) running clinic (1/2 seminar 1/2 training each night) in Knoxville, TN in partnership with a local 5k there (Volunteer Ministry Center). What made this clinic work so well was that two of the people who came out to train were a local news anchor and the star of areas largest radio morning show (Star 102.1).

Through them, the story got a lot of air time and they would actually bring a camera crew out to each run and then show interview clips as a story every Thursday for 7 weeks. As it's not live (only 1 was), you never know what they'll keep and what they'll edit out obviously, but my "naked" feet did get some air time and they let me talk about this "crazy new running style" as they dubbed it.

Over the 7 weeks we had over 80 different people come out with a core group of about 35 that made it to all 7. For about 80% of the group, this will be their first 5k ever, and then about 20% of the group were already accomplished distance runners.

The links to the videos/articles are below for anyone who may be interested/find them helpful - the very last one definitely receieved the most barefoot specific air time and instruction:

Very nice, Levi. I'll take a look at these later today.

Saw you on WATE last night (I live in Oak Ridge).

I'm new to running barefoot -- up to 3 quarters of a mile at this point. My typical shod runs have been 3 miles. Today I ran at the high school track and did the last three laps in my Vibram Five Fingers. I had been doing one or two laps in the grass with naked feet up to this point.

The VFF gave me a blister on my right foot. :( So I came home and ordered a kit from InvisibleShoe.com. Wish I'd found them before I bought the VFFs. Oh, well, live and learn. Looking forward to see how the I-shoes do.

A question I have is how important is it to build up gradually. If I can do .75 miles comfortably, could I go ahead and run 3, or will I be sorry? If I try to go further, will my feet tell me to stop if I'm doing too much too soon?

Your feet will tell you to

Your feet will tell you to stop if you are doing too much too soon... IF you are barefoot, NOT if you are in minimalist shoes (there lies the problem). The shoes mask what your barefeet would tell you so it lures people into a false sense of security, which can cause problems (TMTS).

When do you run at the highschool track? I'll meet you over there one day next week (I actually live in Oak Ridge too)

Thanks for the offer, Levi. I

Thanks for the offer, Levi. I could do an evening -- Monday, Tuesday, or Friday, say 6:00ish? -- or next Saturday afternoon. What works for you?
