Not sure if this has been asked before, can't seem to find anything relevant. I think I broke my toe yesterday running a very technical trail including some pretty intense climbs barefoot. I was running down a single track which was complete with overhanging foilage, and I clipped a rock (I should say boulder) with my right pinky toe. Hurt like heck for a couple of minutes but I was able to continue to run / walk for the rest of the trail with some discomfort if I put a lot of pressure on it.

It is definitely showing some signs of swelling and the bruising patterns are quite interesting (I will have to take a picture and post it later), but I can still walk on it ok with a little bit of pain when I hit it the wrong way. Right now I am wearing my VFF's so it seems ok.

First question, as I have never broken a toe, does the above sound like it is broken or just very bruised.

Second question, can you run with a broken toe?

I have some major runs coming up and don't want to miss them but I don't want to do more damage either.

Any previous experience or comments would be appreciated.

Bob, Bob, Bob!  How do you

Bob, Bob, Bob! How do you get a broken toe, or even a bruised toe into a pair of VFFs? That's what I want to know!

With much difficulty, I must say. but at least they act like a splint sort of :)

Actually that is why I am not sure if it is broken, because I was able to get in the toe pocket without to many explicits. ;-~

I don't think it's so bad if

I don't think it's so bad if you could still run / walk on it. Even if it's technically broken, there's not much you can do about a broken pinky toe, is there?

Be glad you're not lamed!

Thanks for the input, went

Thanks for the input, went for a run tonight, all be it on the short side and there appears to be no ill effects. It doesn't look pretty but at least it does not hurt to run. So I am thinking it is a bad bruise even though a couple of nurse friends of mine looked at it and they still think it is broken.

I'm just leaning on that fact that I have good strong feet, and this is another learning experience to not play pinball with my toes on rocks. ;-)

For what it's worth, I had

For what it's worth, I had the same thing happen to me while jogging along a trail in my VFF KSOs. Was just a short run(I'm doing Couch to 5K "barefoot") but I clipped my left pinky toe on a root in the trail and just fell over. I would have shouted many explitives but my running partner was there and she scares easily (dogs do that).

I limped the two miles back along the trail with my dog trying to drag me along faster, got home and gave it the RICE treatment. It bruised up pretty bad but I managed to keep the swelling down and it ended up not being a break. Retained full motion of the toe throughout and after a week the pain completely subsided.

It's the main reason I'm not into my Vibrams for the woods anymore. I'm sure I could smash my foot with a slipper stype toebox but to CATCH my toe like that, oof.

MAN did that hurt.

I can relate to the hurt

I can relate to the hurt part, especially since I clipped it another couple of times on the way out, I think I might of invented a couple of new words in the process.

Just as a side note, if definitely was not broke, just a heck of a bruise. ;-)

You should not run with a broken toe. You need an x ray to check it. Usually, it is best to immobilize a fracture, but occasional toe fractures do need surgery. This depends on severity.

- Oh, damn it!
How could you possibly run if you can hardly walk?

I broke my pinky toe many years ago when I was a poor student with no insurance. I taped it to the next toe over. It hurt like blazes for a couple of days, then would hurt in teeth-gritting spasms for much of the next six months. I suspect it is the root cause of a painful callus I do battle with on a regular basis. If in doubt, get it checked! (And get insurance ...)

That's one of the good things about living in Canada, free medical, well technically not free we pay for it other ways. So the checkup which told me it was just very badly bruised didn't cost me a dime just a lot of time.
