Opinion on beer?

When I would drink water

When I would drink water after a night of "part-tay-ing" (although I left that behind in my 20s!), I would get drunk all over again. :drunk:

I don't know if you should

I don't know if you should give up on the beer just yet.....I'm a big contributor to the California grape-growing economy so for me deadlegs usually have to do with what I've eaten the day before- and I average more than a glass a night. Actually just PR'd Tuesday on a fast five miler. Some of my basics: cabernet, spinach, tri-tip, and of course running...it works.

During a relay recently my hammies started to cramp on my last leg so I jumped in the van, drank a PBR while my teammate ran for a couple miles, then jumped out and easily finished the leg, uphill. Coincidence? Not likely.

TJ, seriously, Mexican BEFORE a run? No wonder your guts were grumpy!

You could try drinking a light beer and a large glass of water first thing in the morning on nights after you drink heavy beer. Doing that is pretty common to avoid hangovers.

BFKean and TJ back to back in a beer/bfrunning thread? That can only mean the three of us will be racing the runway 5K at OSH end of July. Who's in?

I know, Twink, I know.  Those

I know, Twink, I know. Those beans were calling to me saying, you have energy now, go for a run, then half way through, they turned on me! Ha! Actually, I didn't even have the beans. Ha ha!

My hubby so wants to fly us into Oshkosh at the end of the month, but I'm just not comfortable in little planes...or big ones for that matter. I doubt you will see me, Board. I sorry. :-(

I know there was some talk

I know there was some talk earlier in the thread about alcohol content and such. I find Duvel to be a nice taste and if you like pilsners, it's a lot like that, but it has a much higher alcohol content being a belgian strong ale. It is 8.5% beer but is meant to be a sipping beer, not a session beer. So if you have to run on the morning just have one of these, enjoy a great beer, and keep it to one or two for the evening. Over the night you will drink less alcohol than if you drank many light beers.

love the stuff. i gotta thank

love the stuff. i gotta thank Stomper for taking me to an X-dog race. they give free beer after their races. it's quite refreshing after a race. so refreshing that on saturday's race i brought some cold beers and we all drank in the park afterwards.

oh, i'll also drink it anytime. just not so early in the morning, unless its after a race.

I was a recreational drinker

I was a recreational drinker for decades. When I made my big commitment to getting in shape a year ago, I cut out all alcohol. People can argue its benefits ad nauseum, but in my opinion and based on observations of my ow health, I now believe that other than whatever pleasurable feelings people perceive that they get from drinking, alcohol has no positives--only negatives.

in the last year, I've lost 65 pounds, my blood pressure went from dangers to healthy, my energy levels have soared, and I enjoy life much more. There are factors other than abstinence, of course, but I have no doubt that it is one of the major ones.

Alcohol is poison. Pregnant women are better off shooting heroin and snorting coke than drinking alcohol (FAR better off). It makes some people belligerent, others dangerous, and turns some good people into addicts. There are many who can drink with seemingly no ill effects, but I would argue that it's like saying there are those who can bang their heads on a brick wall with no ill effects, but that doesn't mean it's a good thing to do.

Of course, I'm not saying all drinking is evil and that everyone must stop. I'm just presenting arguments from my own experience. Abstaining from alcohol cannot hurt, it can help in many ways, and if you can do it, good for you.

AAAAAH! Don't cut the beer!!

AAAAAH! Don't cut the beer!! Just drink a bit earlier and give your body a chance to recover before bed. Also adding in some water will probably help. Consider the heaviness a little extra workout. Ha!

I have to agree with Uncle

I have to agree with Uncle Al. My blood father drank himself to death when I was about 19, 25 years ago. My real father, the one who loved me and raised me died almost 2 years ago from cancer due to smoking. If you're going to drink, just do it every once in a while. I can't stand beer or wine, but I love the hard stuff, but only once in awhile. Sorry to bring down the mood. Anyone got a good joke to bring it back up?

Just don't get a hangover.

Just don't get a hangover. You can do this by following the 10% rule. Only increase your consumption by 10% each week. One day you will be able to drink like the tarahumara.

Replace "hangover" with injury, "consumption" with mileage, and "drink" with run to achieve running goals.

TJ and Al, I'm blessed with a

TJ and Al, I'm blessed with a weak constitution. 2 beers and I'm asleep of an evening, so 1 with diner's usually my limit.

I just don't have what it takes to support a real addiction.

Kean, you DO know that this

Kean, you DO know that this years event features special tributes to both Burt Rutan AND Bob Hoover, right?

Burt even got "Catbird" out of mothballs and is flying it to Airventure.

Ha, Tyler!

Ha, Tyler!

I am in the unfotunate (HA!)

I am in the unfotunate (HA!) position of living in Colorado, home to many fine local beers, which has really affected my weekend drinking :D My general plan is to have a couple around dinnertime - 5 to 6pm - and then drink a lot of water before bed. This morning I woke up *slighly hungover, so I swigged a bunch of water and filled up my water belt. Over the course of my LSD I drank FOUR 8oz bottles of water. Take it easy and find what's best for you. I find running really cures a hangover sometimes - fresh air, lots of water, blood pumping it out...really it's better than OJ with tabasco or whatever those crazy alcoholics may reccomend. Then a protien shake afterwards, yeah!

I simply ADORE beer.

But yes, I understand the moderation factor. Because of his beer-drinking, my grandfather died young and I never got to meet him. My mum tells me he would've loved me if he had ever known me. Sad, dude!

....and here I thought this

....and here I thought this was going to be a thread on which beers do you like to consume! :) I personally think that it doesn't matter what you drink or do the night before a run. If you drink too much beer, you're not going to get enough sleep and it's just bad business.

I'm all for drinking a beer after a run though! They were handing out Mich Ultras after my first 1/2 marathon and boy did it taste good! I'm looking forward to doing the full in November. Apparently, they'll be handing out Ultras at the half way point and the finish line.......mmmmmmm......beeeeeerrrrrrrr!
