Hi TJ, I got PF from

Hi TJ,

I got PF from standing in poor shoes behind a counter for 8 hours, then I'd go home and spend another 8 to 10 hours standing in my darkroom printing for an upcoming exhibition. After that initial start it just kept getting worse and worse as great globs of scar tissue built up along my Plantar Aponeurosis (the tendons going from the heel to the toes).

Where I live there aren't too many health care options, so I went to our regions Podiatrist. He had me walk 20 feet away from him, then 20 feet back, told me I over-pronated, and cast me for orthotics. I wore his rock hard plastic orthotics in shoes to correct for over-pronation for a year, and things just kept getting worse.

We got a hand me down computer about this time, and I scoured the Internet for a solution.

In the end I chose a Chiropractor in Vancouver trained in Active Release Technique (ART). This technique breaks up scar tissue in muscles and tendons like Myofascial Release does, except the ART practitioner uses a deep, penetrating stripping motion as the patient moves the effected area through its full range of motion. He had me extend my legs while sitting and point my foot slightly downwards, then I bent my foot back as far as I could and pulled my toes back to make the tendons on the bottom of my foot go as tight as possible. While I did this he pressed about as hard as he could with his thumbs, and in a stripping motion went from my toes to my heel. OUCH-EEE-MOMMA!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went for 5 treatments over two weeks 4 years ago, and my feet have gotten better ever since.

At the same time I also went to a Pedorthist, someone who specializes in foot biomechanics who goes for three years extra training after getting their degree in Health Sciences or Kinesiology just to become an entry level Pedorthist. She examined me for half an hour, declared I had a neutral gait, and made me some flexible orthotics. I wore those for about 2 years until I didn't need them anymore.

Of my original hard plastic orthotics the Pedorthist said, "These are the worst possible kind of orthotics that you could have been prescribed". After first using ART on my feet the Chiropractor said, "How many other people has he (the Podiatrist) done this to"?

Sorry for the essay, but I went through a whole world of hurt! Right now I would say I'm 99% cured of it :)

Just for purposes of clarification in the U.S all that is needed before Pedorthist training is a high school diploma or GED.

Good point. In British Columbia, Canada, where I'm from the situation appears to be very different.

The 50-60 age group is tough. I was pretty happy with running a 8:30 mile pace at my last 25K and the winner in my age bracket 50-54 ran it in a little over a 6 minute mile. I do not have a prayer at the podium any time soon.

So I run this smaller 2 mile race today and SHOULD have come in third, but check out the 58 year old first place guy's time:

Nice, Board.Thanks, Murray.

Nice, Board.

Thanks, Murray. I'm sure your story will help others who are dealing with PF. Be sure to share it often.

No problem TJ, I should

No problem TJ,

I should also add that for the first year after getting worked on I was hyper vigilant not to hurt my feet further, to the point of sitting down while showering, and crawling to the phone if I wasn't wearing my orthotics. The way I figured it, I wouldn't be throwing a frisbee with a broken arm, so why aggravate my feet further while they were trying heal.

There is no one answer...the feet are so complex...I was lucky to find a solution!

Thanks for all these replies.

Thanks for all these replies. Hope we can all be together for our International Barefoot Running Day on Siesta Key, May 6, 2012. I am starting my daily mile membership let's meet up there as well. So proud of what you all are doing.

Murray, do you suppose if you didn't wear the second pair of orthotics, you may have healed as well, or even healed sooner? Perhaps strengthening your feet and plantar fascia by natural means would have worked as well? I'm just wondering. It's good that the second pair did work for you however, or at least didn't hurt you any worse.

I got PF in my right foot from running in shoes twice.

I was able to recover from it the first time after two months using the normal stretching and rehab regiments, but that was using my boat anchors half the time and running barefoot and in VFFs the other half the time.

The second time I got PF, came on with just one step. I went to go pick up my race packet in the Dome here in Atlanta, and it was raining, and I had planned to run in my VFFs the next day at the race, but I didn't want to get them wet, so I decided to put on my Asics Kayanos (boat anchors) to go get my race packet. I put them on, stood up, stepped left, stepped right, and experienced such a horrible pain in my right foot, which nearly brought me to my knees. I managed to run the half the next day in my VFFs but I was in a lot of pain. I swore at that point I would never put my feet in boat anchors again. It took one month to recover from the PF that second time.

Then I had cryosurgery for Morton's Neuroma on both feet. (Studies show MN is a condition that is directly caused by the types of shoes we wear.) What should have been a simple uninvasive procedure took me months to heal from. In the meantime, I had to walk around on my heels just to avoid putting weight on the balls of my feet, where the cryoprobes were inserted. Needless to say, I developed PF in both feet this time (which was later aggravated by some reaction I had to meds or a virus or something, long story like this one). I am still trying to recover from it, but I can tell that each day I run barefoot, my plantar fascia is getting stronger. Wish I could say the cryosurgery worked, but it was a complete failure, caused me a great deal of pain, and robbed me from running. (I was able to get the BRS off the ground, strong and growing during that time though, so that's a plus!) This winter, I am considering traditional surgery (with a scapel) to remove the neuromas on my left foot first (the worst foot) to see how that goes. I won't do both feet at the same time again, and this time I will demand a boot, so I don't develop PF again.

Hi TJ,

Yikes! You've had a tough go of it for sure!!

I think the second pair of orthotics helped, at least psychologically if not physically. They were made with layers of various densities of foam and a thin layer of cork; flexible enough to push the arch area to the floor with your fingers, but offering some support. I can't remember when I stopped wearing them, but it for over a year for sure. (My first pair were rock hard, and every time my plantar aponeurosis went taut it was stretched over the orthotic...picture a bow's string forced over a large rock).

Sometimes I think saying we have PF is like saying we have a headache, in that there could be a gazzilion different reasons for the pain. The feet are just soooo complex.

Our bodies, when given a chance or some level of appropriate assistance, want to heal themselves. The trick is to give it time and to try and only change one thing at a time, otherwise you'll never know which thing helped and which resulted in backwards progress.

Thanks though...your pain was our gain because you set up this gathering place on your down time :)

Best of Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
