Which minimal shoes are you wearing for Tri and what has been your experience? AND what do you recommend?

Welcome Kirsten There has

Welcome Kirsten

There has been some talk about this subject in the Tri forms. For myself I will be going with water shoes. I have been using them while commuting for 7 months and feel comfortable. I think it is something that you have to experiment with and build into just like any activity that requires more foot strength.

I've worn my VFF KSOs for

I've worn my VFF KSOs for three of my sprint tris and my TrekSports for one. I prefer the KSOs over the TrekSports for ground feel, but the KSOs do sometimes rub my feet raw in one spot, which makes longer sockless runs the occasional race against blisters. I'll be wearing KSOs during the Honolulu Olympic May 15th.

These are the only two minimalist shoes I own. They work fine, but I bet the toe sockets slow my T2 down. Now, that doesn't really bother me because I'm not nearly quick enough for that extra five or ten seconds to matter. My VFFs are not keeping me off the podium, the guys riding 25mph and running with a 6min/mi pace are.

Some day in the future I'll be looking in to other minimalist shoes so I don't just wear the VFFs all the time, and those unknown shoes might become race shoes if they are faster to slip on at T2.

So I wear what I've got and while I don't know that they are ideal, I really like running in the VFF KSOs. Someday I'll also get myself a pair of Bikilas, which might become the race shoe.

Thank you for all your

Thank you for all your suggestions and help!

I went out and got the VFF Bikila's so far so good ~ I'm not running in them much because I am doing my actually running bf.

I am going to practice putting them on so that in my first race I'm not toally struggling :) but my first race is a long time from now Sept. I'm thinking it's a bit more challenging when your feet are wet :) LOL

By the time you get to the

By the time you get to the run transition you're feet aren't wet anymore, just sweaty. The hardest part for me is sometimes on the bike my toes go a little numb and fitting numb toes into those freaking toe sockets can be a pain. But with practice its not that bad and I don't think it adds very much time. I'm not fast enough to sweat ten or fifteen extra seconds on T2.

What race are you doing? Long time between now and Sept.

LOL those freaken toe sockets

LOL those freaken toe sockets are deffinitely challenging. For my first tri I will not have clips on my bike so I'll be transitioning from swim to VFFs directly ~ I'm thinking yikes on the wet feet thing. I'm borrowing someone else's bike for the next few months and my first tri.

I am going to start practicing getting my VFFs on with wetish feet. :) ok but it's not like I'm planning on coming in with great time on my first tri or anything but i'ts worth the practice.

This is the Luna Women's Tri in California where we are it will probably be around 95 to 100 degrees.

wish I could do it all with bare feet but ~ maybe the bike wouldn't be such a great idea BF? hummmm

There is at least one BF

There is at least one BF cyclist on here but it ain't for me. The VFFS should slide on pretty well even with wet feet. The inside is smooth enough. I keep a towel at my transition point just in case, so you could do a quick swipe with one and get dry enough.

I have been trying bf biking.

I have been trying bf biking. As I put in more time biking my feet are getting tougher. I still think I will use my water shoes for racing, easy to put on and very grippy. :)
