Making an achilles notch?

So I got my new balance minimus trail and I almost love them alot. They are pretty fantastic for trails, ok on hard packed dirt and well I don't run on pavement in shoes that much so doable for what I need them to do there. However I have one massive issue. They rub really really bad on my achilles. I tried just wearing them and hoping it would get better but that isn't working so well for me. Has anyone had any luck modifying particularily these but others as well by just cutting out a notch. Or is this likely to cause some sort of unravelling and other problems.

Well I tried it first without

Well I tried it first without any socks since that is how they are designed to be worn. But when that started rubbing I threw on some thin socks, which is what I normally run in. That didn't help so I've since went to athletic socks. Those help alittle but not enough and I really hate wearing that thick of a sock. I feel like they are squishing my toes together. You people have all wrecked me for footwear :)

Rather than add a notch, I'd

Rather than add a notch, I'd probably cut it all off at the same level - straight across. I'd use a Dremel and cut-off-wheel attachment, then seal it off with something (duct tape, etc).

I had to cut notchs in my New

I had to cut notchs in my New balance MT100's, it works on these but its not really fabric more like plastic/rubber so there is no unraveled thread....it took 3 trimmings to get it right about a 1/4 inch each trim.

My Merrell Trail gloves have this problem too and they are fabric...later on in the fall I will try them again and may resort to cutting the fabric. I guess sowing the edge down might work after trimming.

Thanks Mokaman, did you just

Thanks Mokaman, did you just cut straight across as Nyah suggested then? The minimuses actually have plasticy/rubber on the backs as well. They are sown in but I think I can resew that or if nothing else shoeglue inside the edges.

I cut them "U" shaped but

I cut them "U" shaped but with a little tapering to get rid of the edges, no sowing either...the plastic/rubber holds by itself. After each cut I ran for 5 - 6 miles but carried socks just in case, one foot was good after the first cut but the other took more to feel right. I thought about cutting them further and sowing a small velcro strap across there...I still might try that when they are wore out as an experiment.

I did end up cutting them. I

I did end up cutting them. I went fairly straight across, although if I have to cut them anymore I'll probably make it more of a U. It seemed to work really well. I didn't sew them yet. I'm going to see how they hold up first and then sew if need be. Now they are pretty much perfect for the trails :)

I just got a pair of the same

I just got a pair of the same shoes. I also think I like them. After my first 5 mile run in them (sockless), I also developed blisters on the achilles. It seems like the top seam is tighter than the rest of the shoe, and rubs. I also cut straight across the achilles with a scissors. So far seems to work ok, but I haven't run in them yet due to blisters heeling.

FWIW, I also cut the rubber band across the forefoot off. That made them too tight on my D-width feet. Careful trimming with the scissors to remove it.

Yeah I really like them now

Yeah I really like them now that I cut them down. It was just way to high and way to stiff. Taking the scissors to a brand new pair of shoes was really really nerve wracking though. I can totally see how they wouldn't be wide enough. Considering I'm in a mens shoe and I think I have fairly slim feet and I think they fit perfect, a normal male foot could be a bit cramped.
